Thursday Conversation - Rick Rule

62

As the bull market for precious metals continues, many are frustrated by the underperformance of the mining sector thus far in 2020. To that end, here's legendary resource investor Rick Rule to help shed some light on this topic.

Many of you are familiar with Rick and his team at Sprott Asset Management. If you are looking for guidance and assistance in your resource investing, they are certainly top-shelf. So it was great fun to get caught up with Rick and ask him to address these three, primary points:

  • Where are we in this renewed bull market for precious metal?
  • Which size/type of mining company is currently in favor?
  • What will it take to draw institutional money to the sector?

Additionally, at the end of the podcast, Rick offers an email address where any listener can send him a list of resource stocks and he will reply with his current thoughts on each. He'll also send you two important charts so, if you're interested, be sure to contact him at rankings at sprottglobal dot com.

Thanks again to Rick for so generously sharing his time and expertise in this podcast. I'm confident that you will benefit greatly by listening.

KL amended ASPP

@Goldfanbrad, great catch; I doubt anyone was expecting this. If you listen to the conference call yesterday morning, you could tell the management team was highly frustrated by the ‘what have you done to the stock price’ line of questioning... Lets see if today’s gold price lifts KL alone; or whether the broker adds this ASPP as rocket fuel... could be a fun day!

5 or 6 Stocks vs Indexed ETF?

What Rick Rule says about ETF's and the amount of bad companies out there makes sense but if you are like me then your knowledge of the mining business and how to pick a good stock is about as much use as a chocolate tea cup. I use the 3rd option which is to buy into a managed fund and let someone more knowledgeable than me pick the stocks in the hope that their greater wisdom is worth the fees. I know this method doesn't perform well in the broader stock market but in the mine field that is mining i prefer this.

I think he makes a great point about not trying too hard to outperform a market that is poised to give outstanding returns regardless. Too much trading in and out can cause you to miss a sudden big move up if you are not agile enough.

Monster box premiums

What would be the reason for 2012 monster boxes of ASE carrying a 20% premium over 2019 or 2020? Older monster boxes seem to be much less available than they were not long ago. JM has 5-2012's and Provident has none other than 2019 and 2020.

Any thoughts on this afternoons Kirkland Lake news release?

Anyone else think this afternoon's KL news release could cause a short squeeze Friday? KL added a designated broker to buy up to 7 million shares by May 28th to go along with their NCIB share buybacks. Big news is that the designated broker is effective immediately and can buyback shares starting Friday, instead of KL having to wait until Monday to start the buyback shares due to a 2 day blackout after earnings release. If part of the drop was shorting by shorters thinking they could cover on Friday before KL could start the buybacks, then they may have a rude awakening Friday.
