Right on cue, gold rebounded today and recovered most of the contract expiration losses of yesterday. Now, with another volatile week ahead, can it crawl back toward $1300 and, if it does, what will happen with silver?

As we wrap up the week and the month (a month which saw gold +8% while the S&P was -3%), just a discussion of these charts:

GOLD

SILVER

the HUI and the S&P

And this crazy chart of 10-year German and Japanese bond yields

Austrian teacher suspended for defending Paris attacks

An Islamic studies teacher from Graz has been suspended by Styria’s State Board of Education after allegedly defending the recent attacks in Paris during a lesson.

The man, who teaches at a school for ten to 14-year-olds, reportedly told his students that it is acceptable to hurt somebody if they have offended Allah.

The school board told the Austrian Press Agency (APA) that his students also said that he told them in a conversation outside of school that he considered killing someone to be a legitimate form of punishment for insulting Islam.

His students reported him to social workers and the school principal.

The case has been handed over to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counterterrorism (BVT). If the allegations are confirmed the man will be banned from teaching, the president of the school board told APA.

Saudi Arabia 'not pleased' with Austria

Austria’s Chancellor Werner Faymann (SPÖ) has said he is in favour of withdrawing all support from the centre, after it failed to condemn the public flogging of Saudi blogger Raif Badawi and chose to remain silent on other human rights issues.

However, the Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz warned that Saudi Arabia might relocate the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ headquarters away from Vienna if Austria does decide to close down the King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID). Kurz’s warning was highlighted in a special report prepared by the Foreign Ministry at the request of Faymann. Kurz stressed that Austria would face a series of negative repercussions due to its important economic and political relations with the Arab world, and that Vienna’s reputation as a venue for international organizations could suffer.

The Kronen Zeitung tabloid newspaper reports that diplomatic insiders view the discussion around the centre’s future as a “ridiculous farce” and that relations between Riyadh and Vienna are “as cool as the North Pole - even if Austria won’t admit it”. The Austrian Press Agency (APA) has quoted ‘informed sources’ as saying that the issue “has been very awkwardly staged”. Peter Kaiser, the press spokesman for KAICIID, said that rumours that the centre might relocate to Geneva were untrue. “We have no plans to leave Vienna, and on the contrary, we intend to expand the centre,” he said.

@ Libero

Oh no, if so, Brady might pick 'em apart as you say. Edelman & Bronk are perfect for those short slants over the middle. Legion of Boom might end the day as the Legion of Gloom :-( Hope not. I'd hate to sit through a boring lop-sided game (there are always the commercials to keep things interesting). I imagine Hightower will be assigned to containing Wilson. He was very effective in that role against Luck. Wilson is a lot faster and shiftyer (can I say that?).

Edit: one thing for sure, Wilson & the hawks offense can't afford to leave their defense on the field for 13 minutes of the 1st quarter the way they did against the pack!

Infometron: Super Bowl

will be a super game. Word is that Chancellor might have tweaked his knee in practice but he will play. The big three of the Seahawks' secondary all have some type of injury while the Pats are all healthy! I don't recall the Pats being this healthy. Watch Brady go with the short passing game, and make this wounded secondary do a lot of tackling.

I expect the Pats defense will be the surprise of the game, as Belichick always has an answer for the quarterback du jour.

Got my Red's beers chillin'.
