A Tribute to Sue!

When we first arrived in South Africa, about 35 + years ago, we met Sue and her husband. They belonged to a Christian Businessmen's group. I met them at the convention center along the Indian Ocean and we became great friends, instantly. They invited me to their home, near Zululand, and we began to work with the local groups and revival meetings within the Zulu area. Sue could speak about six differing languages and she was a blessing to have around. It makes one feel a bit uneducated, being from the NW, when someone like Sue can talk and teach, out in the bush, or even in Europe.

She had the great gift of hospitality. I would stay with them, in their home, on every trip into Africa. Her husband and I, along with Linda a few times, would travel to England, the Ukraine and other venues, preaching the Good News. Oh what a blessing it was to be with them and how they have touched the lives of the many, for decades. Well, Sue had a great lunch and dinner last week, felt great, went to bed, fell into a coma and died quickly.

Thank you Lord, she was a blessing to the Church and we will see her again. Jim

Nephalim

There is always a lot of uncertainty and wild speculation, and even mysticism (even among Christians) about who the Nephalim were, were they fallen angels mating with women producing a weird new race of giants etc. It's best not to overthink this. Here is excellent commentary from Matthew Henry, an 1800's respected reformed Pastor, which clearly lays it all out. I concur with this interpretation.

NEPHILIM [NEFF ih lem] (fallen ones) — the offspring of marriages between the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men” (Gen 6:4). The word “Nephilim” is translated as “giants” by the KJV and NKJV (Gen 6:4; Num 13:33; Nephilim, NIV, REB, NASB, NRSV). Some scholars believe the Nephilim were descended from famous rulers, outstanding leaders, and mighty warriors who lived before the Flood. These men, so the theory goes, gathered great harems and were guilty of the sin of polygamy. The Nephilim were the product of these marriages. Also see Giants.

Genesis 6:1-2

For the glory of God's justice, and for warning to a wicked world, before the history of the ruin of the old world, we have a full account of its degeneracy, its apostasy from God and rebellion against him. The destroying of it was an act, not of an absolute sovereignty, but of necessary justice, for the maintaining of the honour of God's government. Now here we have an account of two things which occasioned the wickedness of the old world: - 1. The increase of mankind: Men began to multiply upon the face of the earth. This was the effect of the blessing (Gen 1:28), and yet man's corruption so abused and perverted this blessing that it was turned into a curse. Thus sin takes occasion by the mercies of God to be the more exceedingly sinful. Pro 29:16, When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth. The more sinners the more sin; and the multitude of offenders emboldens men. Infectious diseases are most destructive in populous cities; and sin is a spreading leprosy. Thus in the New Testament church, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring (Act 6:1), and we read of a nation that was multiplied, not to the increase of their joy, Isa 9:3. Numerous families need to be well-governed, lest they become wicked families. 2. Mixed marriages (Gen 6:2): The sons of God (that is, the professors of religion, who were called by the name of the Lord, and called upon that name), married the daughters of men, that is, those that were profane, and strangers to God and godliness. The posterity of Seth did not keep by themselves, as they ought to have done, both for the preservation of their own purity and in detestation of the apostasy. They intermingled themselves with the excommunicated race of Cain: They took them wives of all that they chose. But what was amiss in these marriages? (1.) They chose only by the eye: They saw that they were fair, which was all they looked at. (2.) They followed the choice which their own corrupt affections made: they took all that they chose, without advice and consideration. But, (3.) That which proved of such bad consequence to them was that they married strange wives, were unequally yoked with unbelievers, 2Co 6:14. This was forbidden to Israel, Deu 7:3, Deu 7:4. It was the unhappy occasion of Solomon's apostasy (1Ki 11:1-4), and was of bad consequence to the Jews after their return out of Babylon, Ezr 9:1, Ezr 9:2. Note, Professors of religion, in marrying both themselves and their children, should make conscience of keeping within the bounds of profession. The bad will sooner debauch the good than the good reform the bad. Those that profess themselves the children of God must not marry without his consent, which they have not if they join in affinity with his enemies.

Genesis 6:3

This comes in here as a token of God's displeasure at those who married strange wives; he threatens to withdraw from them his Spirit, whom they had grieved by such marriages, contrary to their convictions: fleshly lusts are often punished with spiritual judgments, the sorest of all judgments. Or as another occasion of the great wickedness of the old world; the Spirit of the Lord, being provoked by their resistance of his motions, ceased to strive with them, and then all religion was soon lost among them. This he warns them of before, that they might not further vex his Holy Spirit, but by their prayers might stay him with them. Observe in this verse,

I. God's resolution not always to strive with man by his Spirit. The Spirit then strove by Noah's preaching (1Pe 3:19, 1Pe 3:20) and by inward checks, but it was in vain with the most of men; therefore, says God, He shall not always strive. Note, 1. The blessed Spirit strives with sinners, by the convictions and admonitions of conscience, to turn them from sin to God. 2. If the Spirit be resisted, quenched, and striven against, though he strive long, he will not strive always, Hos 4:17. 3. Those are ripening apace for ruin whom the Spirit of grace has left off striving with.

II. The reason of this resolution: For that he also is flesh, that is, incurably corrupt, and carnal, and sensual, so that it is labour lost to strive with him. Can the Ethiopian change his skin? He also, that is, All, one as well as another, they have all sunk into the mire of flesh. Note, 1. It is the corrupt nature, and the inclination of the soul towards the flesh, that oppose the Spirit's strivings and render them ineffectual. 2. When a sinner has long adhered to that interest, and sided with the flesh against the Spirit, the Spirit justly withdraws his agency, and strives no more. None lose the Spirit's strivings but those that have first forfeited them.

III. A reprieve granted, notwithstanding: Yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years; so long I will defer the judgment they deserve, and give them space to prevent it by their repentance and reformation. Justice said, Cut them down; but mercy interceded, Lord, let them alone this year also; and so far mercy prevailed, that a reprieve was obtained for six-score years. Note, The time of God's patience and forbearance towards provoking sinners is sometimes long, but always limited: reprieves are not pardons; though God bear a great while, he will not bear always.

Genesis 6:4-5

We have here a further account of the corruption of the old world. When the sons of God had matched with the daughters of men, though it was very displeasing to God, yet he did not immediately cut them off, but waited to see what would be the issue of these marriages, and which side the children would take after; and it proved (as usually it does), that they took after the worst side. Here is,

I. The temptation they were under to oppress and do violence. They were giants, and they were men of renown; they became too hard for all about them, and carried all before them, 1. With their great bulk, as the sons of Anak, Num 13:33. 2. With their great name, as the king of Assyria, Isa 37:11. These made them the terror of the mighty in the land of the living; and, thus armed, they daringly insulted the rights of all their neighbours and trampled upon all that is just and sacred. Note, Those that have so much power over others as to be able to oppress them have seldom so much power over themselves as not to oppress; great might is a very great snare to many. This degenerate race slighted the honour their ancestors had obtained by virtue and religion, and made themselves a great name by that which was the perpetual ruin of their good name.

II. The charge exhibited and proved against them, Gen 6:5. The evidence produced was incontestable. God saw it, and that was instead of a thousand witnesses. God sees all the wickedness that is among the children of men; it cannot be concealed from him now, and, if it be not repented of, it shall not be concealed by him shortly. Now what did God take notice of? 1. He observed that the streams of sin that flowed along in men's lives, and the breadth and depth of those streams: He saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth. Observe the connection of this with what goes before: the oppressors were mighty men and men of renown; and, then, God saw that the wickedness of man was great.Note, The wickedness of a people is great indeed when the most notorious sinners are men of renown among them. Things are bad when bad men are not only honoured notwithstanding their wickedness, but honoured for their wickedness, and the vilest men exalted. Wickedness is then great when great men are wicked. Their wickedness was great, that is, abundance of sin was committed in all places, by all sorts of people; and such sin as was in its own nature most gross, and heinous, and provoking; it was committed daringly, and with a defiance of heaven, nor was any care taken by those that had power in their hands to restrain and punish it. This God saw. Note, All the sins of sinners are known to God the Judge. Those that are most conversant in the world, though they see much wickedness in it, yet they see but little of that which is; but God sees all, and judges aright concerning it, how great it is, nor can he be deceived in his judgment. 2. He observed the fountain of sin that was in men's hearts. Any one might see that the wickedness of man was great, for they declared their sin as Sodom; but God's eye went further: He saw that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually - a sad sight, and very offensive to God's holy eye! This was the bitter root, the corrupt spring: all the violence and oppression, all the luxury and wantonness, that were in the world, proceeded from the corruption of nature; lust conceived them, Jas 1:15. See Mat 15:19. (1.) The heart was naught; it was deceitful and desperately wicked. The principles were corrupt, and the habits and dispositions evil. (2.) The thoughts of the heart were so. Thought is sometimes taken for the settled judgment or opinion, and this was bribed, and biased, and misled; sometimes it signifies the workings of the fancy, and these were always either vain or vile, either weaving the spider's web or hatching the cockatrice's egg. (3.) The imagination of the thoughts of the heart was so, that is, their designs and devices were wicked. They did not do evil through mere carelessness, as those that walk at all adventures, not heeding what they do; but they did evil deliberately and designedly, contriving how to do mischief. It was bad indeed; for it was only evil, continually evil, and every imagination was so. There was no good to be found among them, no, not at any time: the stream of sin was full, and strong, and constant; and God saw it; see Psa 14:1-3.

Ezekiel 3:18-19

We are called to warn others of approaching judgment, just as Noah preached in his day, for 120 years. What many on this board claim is "judgment" and "venom" is simply the truth of Gods Word. Truth often stings a bit, like a good medicine on an open wound. That's one way that you know it's working. But with that sting comes healing. Very few other Christians on here speak up, and i'm sure many of you could write better than I do, with smoother style, etc. ;)

The verses below are my reasons for doing so, as well as a sincere desire to see more saved from the judgment to come. If you are not warning others, these verses will be convicting. Sometimes the difficult verses must be presented, even at the risk of being called "unloving". The truth is far from that, having experienced His slowness to anger, mercy and loving kindness myself, beyond anything remotely deserved.

So, this is Gods warning to those who don't speak out to warn others:

"When I say to the wicked, 'You will surely die,' and you do not warn him or speak out to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. yet if you have warned the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered yourself." Ezekiel 3:18-19

I personally don't want their blood to be on my hands. My conscious is clear, even if accused of being judgmental, or ''venomous". Prayerfully consider the verses above.

Here is some commentary on this, again from Matthew Henry:

II. What is the duty of this office. The work of a watchman is to take notice and to give notice.

1. The prophet, as a watchman, must take notice of what God said concerning this people, not only concerning the body of the people, to which the prophecies of Jeremiah and other prophets had most commonly reference, but concerning particular persons, according as their character was. He must not, as other watchmen, look round to spy danger and gain intelligence, but he must look up to God, and further he need not look: Hear the word at my mouth, Eze 3:17. Note, Those that are to preach must first hear; for how can those teach others who have not first learned themselves?

2. He must give notice of what he heard. As a watchman must have eyes in his head, so he must have a tongue in his head; if he be dumb, it is as bad as if he were blind, Isa 56:10. Thou shalt give them warning from me, sound an alarm in the holy mountain; not in his own name, or as from himself, but in God's name, and from him. Ministers are God's mouth to the children of men. The scriptures are written for our admonition. By them is thy servant warned, Psa 19:11. But, because that which is delivered vivâ voce - by the living voice, commonly makes the deepest impression, God is pleased, by men like ourselves, who are equally concerned, to enforce upon us the warnings of the written word. Now the prophet, in his preaching, must distinguish between the wicked and the righteous, the precious and the vile, and in his applications must suit his alarms to each, giving every one his portion; and, if he did this, he should have the comfort of it, whatever the success was, but, if not, he was accountable.

(1.) Some of those he had to do with were wicked, and he must warn them not to go on in their wickedness, but to turn from it, Eze 3:18, Eze 3:19. We may observe here, [1.] That the God of heaven has said, and does say, to every wicked man, that if he go on still in his trespasses he shall surely die. His iniquity shall undoubtedly be his ruin; it tends to ruin and will end in ruin. Dying thou shalt die, thou shalt die so great a death, shalt die eternally, be ever dying, but never dead. The wicked man shall die in his iniquity, shall fie under the guilt of it, die under the dominion of it. [2.] That if a wicked man turn from his wickedness, and from his wicked way, he shall live, and the ruin he is threatened with shall be prevented; and, that he may do so, he is warned of the danger he is in. The wicked man shall die if he go on, but shall live if he repent. Observe, he is to turn from his wickedness and from his wicked way. It is not enough for a man to turn from his wicked way by an outward reformation, which may be the effect of his sins leaving him rather than of his leaving his sins, but he must turn from his wickedness, from the love of it and the inclination to it, by an inward regeneration; if he do not so much as turn from his wicked way, there is little hope that he will turn from his wickedness. [3.] That it is the duty of ministers both to warn sinners of the danger of sin and to assure them of the benefit of repentance, to set before them how miserable they are if they go on in sin, and how happy they may be if they will but repent and reform. Note, The ministry of the word is concerning matters of life and death, for those are the things it sets before us, the blessing and the curse, that we may escape the curse and inherit the blessing. [4.] That, though ministers do not warn wicked people as they ought of their misery and danger, yet that shall not be admitted as an excuse for those that go on still in their trespasses; for, though the watchman did not give them warning, yet they shall die in their iniquity, for they had sufficient warning given them by the providence of God and their own consciences; and, if they would have taken it, they might have saved their lives. [5.] That if ministers be not faithful to their trust, if they do not warn sinners of the fatal consequences of sin, but suffer them to go on unreproved, the blood of those that perish through their carelessness will be required at their hand. It shall be charged upon them in the day of account that it was owing to their unfaithfulness that such and such precious souls perished in sin; for who knows but if they had had fair warning given them they might have fled in time from the wrath to come? And, if it contract so heinous a guilt as it does to be accessory to the murder of a dying body, what is it to be accessory to the ruin of an immortal soul? [6.] That if ministers do their duty in giving warning to sinners, though the warning be not taken, yet they may have this satisfaction, that they are clear from their blood, and have delivered their own souls, though they cannot prevail to deliver theirs. Those that are faithful shall have their reward, though they be not successful.

Very true statements. I have pondered, many times, about your issues. I have been writing here, for years, some have come, some gone and even a few have been saved from the forum. Yes there are many who read the posts, few respond privately but who knows what is stirring within. Many are not comfortable to come upon a site and tell of their pastor's view of the church and the teachings. With so many divided systems of men, little agreement will be found from speaking in tongues being from the Spirit of God or some seeing it as fom the devil. Oh what a mess!

The real tragedy, for me, is not being able to get into the meat. There seems to be little interest in the Truth, given to the early Church, and we seem to be stuck on teaching the bare basics, hoping that a flicker of Light may enter the detoured believers.

I have been attending a group of old men that meet four times a week. I go about once a week. I would pray, "Lord, what am I doing here?" For some reason, they seem to be all old time Latin Catholics. They talk about the ashes for ash Wednesday and how they are made or sitting through long masses, bored and wanting to get out of there. They talk about the conformation services being too long, etc. and the basics of Christianity are never viewed, being blinded. Oh what a mess! This is the same problem everywhere. I do ponder if it is time for me to move onward from this forum and let others pick up the postings. I also ponder if it is time for me to hit the road for revivals again. Oh how thankful I am for the local Church. We have met for over 25 years and the fruit remains. I will ponder these things as time is short and few in our culture will listen to the Truth which is "ONLY" in Christ Jesus as Lord, being the Way, the Only Way and that will never change. Jim

Good Post

yes the steeple systems as you call them have many confused and even blinded. At best, they are reduced to inaction and no threat to the real enemy and no help to others either.

This does seem to be a nice small, quiet corner of the site, with little participation or reeadership.

Im sure if your email being called to a new task for the Lord, you will know it and properly understand it and move forward in it. He will guide your ways.

Dr. P and the words of George Fox - 1648

I have borrowed the term "steeple house" from George. He fully understood that the people were the Church and the building was just a house with a steeple. I thank George Fox for bringing this truth to the body, though they tried to kill him for the sake of the gospel:

George Fox at a steeple-house in 1648

Posted: July 4, 2014 in ecclesia, Jesus, quotes

7

I saw the people gathered together in the yard. The old priest would have had me go into the steeple-house. I said, ‘no, it was no matter.’ But it was strange to the people that I would not go into what they called the house of God. I stood up in the steeple-house yard, and declared to the people that I came not to hold up their idol temples, nor their priests, nor their tithes, nor their augmentations, nor their priests’ wages, nor their Jewish and heathenish ceremonies and traditions, (for I denied all these); and I told them, that piece of ground was no more holy than another piece of ground. I showed them; that the apostles going into the Jews’ synagogues and temples, which God had commanded, was to bring people away from that temple, and those synagogues, and from the offerings, tithes, and covetous priests of that time. That those who came to be convinced of the truth, converted to it, and believed in Jesus Christ, whom the apostles preached, met together in dwelling houses; and that all who preach Christ, the word of life, ought to preach freely, as the apostles did, and as he commanded.

So I was sent of the Lord God of heaven and earth to preach freely, and to bring people off from these outward temples made with hands, which God dwells not in; that they might know their bodies to become the temples of God and of Christ; and to draw people off from all their superstitious ceremonies, Jewish and heathenish customs, traditions, and doctrines of men; and from all the world’s hired teachers, that take tithes, and great wages, preaching for hire, and divining for money; whom God and Christ never sent, as themselves confess, when they say, they never heard God’s nor Christ’s voice.

I exhorted the people to come off from all these things, directing them to the spirit and grace of God in themselves, and to the light of Jesus in their own hearts; that they might come to know Christ, their free teacher, to bring them salvation, and to open the scriptures to them. Thus the Lord gave me a good opportunity to open things largely to them. All was quiet, and many were convinced; blessed be the Lord. -George Fox

Prosperity, just a different false gospel!

I have listened to, traveled with, several prosperity false gospel preachers/teachers. Oh the damage that they have done to the work of the Church and His Kingdom. The blind ones, were promoted quickly because they brought great fiat gains into the systems of men. I witnessed the damage done in Africa by detoured prosperity teachers. Some of the African brothers called it "rubbish" and I agree.

The damage continues within most of the mega- steeple house systems, so-called Christian t.v. and the detoured books in Christian book stores. I have been there to witness the damage and the sheep believe the preachers, lacking any discernment or wisdom, the assemblies be void of any biblical elders. I could say much, however, a great price will be paid at the Gates of the Kingdom and much weeping will be seen before a multitude. Oh Lord, deliver the sheep from the wolves:

5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. (1 Tim. 6)

Faith?

I was in Kenya back in the early '90's. There were several word/faith/prosperity teachers/preachers and several from FGBMFI. They deposited a detour within the nation that spread and that false gospel is still alive around the globe. Repentance is the only cure for sin in the camp:

I was also in Kenya in the early 70s.

The author of that piece claims "I am a pastor in a small village about 500 kilometers west of Nairobi—in Kenya’s sugar belt region..."
He must have had lots of faith because 500 km west of Nairobi would place him slap bang in the middle of Lake Victoria.

BTW

The reason I commented on your thread was that I saw that you had posted something about Kenya. Since I had lived in Kisumu on the lake shore for two years and during that time had travelled by car to Nairobi and back several times I had an idea of the distance, though in those days in Kenya we used miles.
No offense intended!

Thanks for your posts, I'm not a bit offended. I was thinking it may have been in the '80's instead of the '90's. We traveled several times to South Africa, Kenya and Ghana. Once in Nigeria and that was a lesson to learn. Don't even change planes in that nation, the most corrupt place I have ever visited.

My decades of grief comes from the nightmare of being with international speakers, coming in as enlightened teachers of the good news, filled with hype, leaving the citizens with a false hope and a false gospel. Even to this day, I would have liked to have said much more to those men and women who departed from the Faith that was once delivered to them. I should have been a George Fox instead of a too quiet Jim.

The men's group!

Well, there are two men's groups, the old gathering of Christian men's grouping and the several that I meet with today.

The new group, as you know, are mostly above 70 years old. I am making some progress with them and they are a challenge. This morning, I took Linda with me to the coffee shop. A few women do come, time to time. The only comment from them was that I had married above my station. I agreed. There is always a timing for all things and I am aware of my task. jim

A new fence around my garden:

There are lessons to learn in this life and the Lord allows us to be confronted with many opportunities. How will we react?

My home is at the end of our development and several years ago, I put a small fence around our garden. There are only about 22 homes in our development. I decided to tear down our old ugly fence, as I have stated before, and build a new beautiful fence.

Linda even painted the new wood to match the brick on our home. No one had ever complained about our fence. Then it happened! The president of the association knocked on my door. He said he has four people complain about my new beautiful fence. It did not meet the covenants for a fence. I needed to have a six foot tall cedar board fence or remove the garden.

This is where our thinking may get sidetracked. I told the pres., "My life does not consist of having a fenced garden and I will be happy to remove the fencing".

They had an annual homeowners meeting on Wednesday night. We stayed home. My fence was brought up and several neighbors loved my new fence. The four who had complained were silent. They decided that as long as we lived here and had a garden, the fence could remain.

Oh yes, being a builder, I could have gone to the meeting, pointed out the several covenant violations, up and down the street and stirred up a hornets nest. It takes a lot of years to learn how to keep ones mouth shut and I am still learning. Jim

My pre- Sunday morning rant!

There are a few items that really disturb me and I have been watching them for decades. There are many believers who are visiting heaven, being transported to all parts of the globe and even into hell. There are countless videos of after death, alive again, visitors to other dimensions along with seeing those in Heaven and hell. There are those prophets ( be careful), who have Jesus and even the prophets of old, visit them on a regular basis. There are the many who see angels, talk to them, some are small angels and some quite large.

These same people are the ones who are writing books, having interviews on TBN, traveling on the circuit of steeple house systems, and are the major speakers at Christian conventions. There is often, most of the time, something just missing. When someone says they had a visitation, who can argue or verify? No one! They tell the assembly the things that they want to hear.

We see in the book of Revelations, the letter to the seven Churches. We see the warnings to return to the Lord, to His Word and our first Love. We see the warning to come to "repentance" and if not, the outcome for the Churches. When I see/hear a messenger that comes forth, someone who says they have seen Him or been visited by the Angel of the Lord and this person says something like this, they will get my attention:

"I had a vision yesterday morning and the Angel of the Lord appeared before me. I was quite shocked, believing it could happen but not to me. It was a bit frightening and I was a bit frozen. I hoped that I was not in trouble with the Lord and this angel was not coming to take me to His Home.

The Angel said to calm down and not be afraid. He said he had been sent to give me a message to the Church. He said that the enemy had so invaded the branches that little remained of the original planting of the Lord. The Lord had said it is His Garden and He is still building His Church. The assemblies must come to repentance, having divided the flock of God, in violation of the scriptures. He said the Lord had sent many to warn the assemblies of their departure from Him and those who were sent had been rejected or killed, just like the true prophets of old. He said while there is still yet today, the five fold ministries must come forth, unshackled by the priestcraft of today, seeing the Priesthood of all that believe. Let no man have a label, no divisions away from the Lord, no clergy or layman, just a follower of the Savior of the world. Let him who is bound up, slaves to men and systems, become truly free for the Lord has set His Children free, removing the yoke of slavery by Satan. The Lord saying to return to Him, reject to trappings of mankind and false religions and sects or their entrance into the Gates of the Kingdom will be difficult. The Angel saying that the calling of the Prophets is to warn the Church of their roadway to Babylon as the narrow Roadway to Life still remains for whosoever will." With this, the Angel departed with a flash, only saying, take heed and do not fall into the trappings yourself as the systems will try to capture you and your message". amen (P.S., I have not seen an angel). Jim
