Seven reasons to ditch Big Pharma's antibiotics

(NaturalNews) Since the 1940s, antibiotics have become the standard treatment for bacterial infections. Most believe that pharmaceutical antibiotics are a miracle "silver bullet" for infectious diseases and that antibiotics alone were responsible for curtailing the major life-threatening, infectious diseases plaguing humanity.

According to Thomas McKeown, MD, author of The Role of Medicine, "Deaths from common infections were declining long before effective medical intervention was possible." [1] View graphs here.

(1) Mutant Bacteria

In 1947, when penicillin was rolled out for mass production, the first bacterium resistant to it was soon discovered, Staphylococcus aureus. The fact is that antibiotics, even when used appropriately, can create mutant bacteria. [2]

In fact, the highest rates of methicillin-resistant S. aureus infections are correlated with the countries that prescribe the most antibiotics. In 2009, Norway had one of the lowest rates of hospital infections in the world.

Why? Approximately 30 years ago, Norway made a pivotal decision to reduce overall antibiotic use to only what was necessary. [3]

(2) Weakened Immune System

Peter J. D'Adamo, ND, is a naturopathic physician and author known for his pioneering research on the interconnectedness of human blood groups, lifestyle, nutrition and health.

Dr. D'Adamo explained, "When you allow your body to go to war on its own terms, without antibiotic intervention, it develops not only a memory of specific antibodies to the current infection and any similar to it, but also the ability to fight more effectively the next time it is challenged or attacked."

In other words, the invaders are getting stronger, but our immune systems are less prepared to handle them. [4]

Antibiotics suppress the immune system, as opposed to merely assisting it to do its job more effectively. In fact, antibiotics "cut off immune response." They can reduce the level of infection, but they cannot eradicate it; only the immune system can do that. [5]

Using Natures Remedies for Health and Wellness

Although I have been using natural remedies and DIY salves exclusively for almost a year, things really came to a head when a root canal was canceled after ingesting a brew of lemon juice, turmeric, and cayenne pepper that I named “Dee’s Cocktail”. Imagine my utter surprise when my dentist grinned at me, canceled the procedure, and encouraged me to continue to use “nature’s antibiotics” including turmeric, cayenne, cinnamon, and oregano!

How Do Plant Derivatives and Essential Oils Work?

Being a seeker of knowledge, I wanted to pursue the science of how plants and their derivatives such as essential oils work on the human body. I found this recent article on the National Library of Medicine (part of the National Institute of Health) website: Effect of Essential Oils on Pathogenic Bacteria.

The increasing resistance of microorganisms to conventional chemicals and drugs is a serious and evident worldwide problem that has prompted research into the identification of new biocides with broad activity.

Plants and their derivatives, such as essential oils, are often used in folk medicine. In nature, essential oils play an important role in the protection of plants. Essential oils contain a wide variety of secondary metabolites that are capable of inhibiting or slowing the growth of bacteria, yeasts and moulds.

Essential oils and their components have activity against a variety of targets, particularly the membrane and cytoplasm, and in some cases, they completely change the morphology of the cells. This brief review describes the activity of essential oils against pathogenic bacteria.

To see something like this is writing from a credible source was encouraging. To that end, over the years, I have learned so very much from the shared experience and knowledge of others. I wish I was smart enough to be an expert at everything. Since I am not, I often call upon others who have already done some of the heavy lifting in seeking out information on topics I find important.

Today, with the assistance of Contributing Author Rebecca Schiffhauer, I share some thoughts about natural remedies and why they work. Treat this article as a starting point for opening your mind to the miracle of nature and the herbs, plants, fruits, seeds and oils that can contribute to our health and wellness in a holistic, safe manner and natural manner.

Natural Antibiotic Remedies & Why They Work

“The ability of oils from various spices to kill infectious organisms has been recognized since antiquity. Natural oils may turn out to be valuable adjuvants or even replacements for many anti-germicidals under a variety of conditions.”

Harry G. Preuss, MD, Professor of physiology and biophysics, Georgetown University

You can find nature in one of its most powerful forms, the essence and life-force of plants found in what we commonly refer to as essential oils. Essential oils are derived from flowers, trees, grasses, leaves, roots and fruits. Their powerful essence is indispensable to medicine. Western medicine seeks to create chemical copies of essential oils because of their extremely effective and complex medical system.

Using Natures Remedies for Health and Wellness Backdoor Survival

Essential oils provide a system of medicine that not only is in total biochemical harmony with our bodies, but they’re non-invasive too! Their delivery system is so efficient that synthetic drugs look crude in comparison.

This is why: Synthetic antibiotics cannot penetrate the cell wall to get at the virus but, PURE essential oils can! You don’t have to take my word for it, read about the following studies and what the experts have to say:

Essential oils to fight superbugs
Oregano Oil May Protect Against Drug-Resistant Bacteria, Georgetown Researcher Finds

Given the science, why is it that doctors readily write prescriptions for ineffective antibiotics that break down our immunity instead of fortifying it and are inferior to what has been under our feet and noses for centuries…NATURE?

I could write a short novel on this subject however instead, I’ll encourage you to do your own research and, ask questions! Always ask questions when seeking medical help and keep asking until you’re satisfied with the answer. Amen.

Over the course of time as I’ve turned to a more holistic approach to health and wellness, I’ve tried to blend organic ingredients to create an even more powerful remedies. Here is an example.

Antibiotic Tea

Stir a heaping teaspoon of Manuka Honey and 2 drops of Shield Protective Blend in a cup of very warm water along with 1 drop of Lemon for a powerful dose of nature’s antibiotics! Perfect for a sore throat, cold and cough, congested chest and flu symptoms. Drink as needed.

Using Natures Remedies for Health and Wellness Backdoor Survival

If you’ve never heard of Manuka Honey that hales from New Zealand, now is the time to Google it! This particular honey is Live, Raw, Unpasteurized and Organic.
Manuka Honey is produced by bees who forage on the Manuka Tree (Tea Tree) creating a very special medicinal honey.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I share this with you because it’s time to turn back to the gifts of the earth. Reach for nature’s medicine first. Nature’s medicine cabinet has answers that modern medicine just can’t duplicate hard as they try!
Speaking of natural medicine cabinets and the inhabitants there of, here’s yet another natural remedy with antibiotic properties. This is a great remedy to whip up when you have a nasty cold or flu bug trying to get hold. Start this antibiotic protocol (that works!) just as you begin to feel symptoms.
Natural Antibiotic Blend aka Cold & Flu Bomb
3 drops Oregano
3 drops Melaleuca
3 drops Shield Protective Blend
Take 3x daily, for 5 days. If your symptoms are acute already, every 3 hrs. For the nastiest of stubborn bugs, rub extra Oregano diluted with a bit of carrier oil on bottoms of feet as needed!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I hope I’ve been able to pique your interest in considering a better way to wellness. Thousands are discovering the old (essential oils) is new again and embarking on this new journey! I’m happily dedicating my time and efforts to share what I know in order to bring all of this exciting information back into the mainstream of our crazy, busy lives!

Free Range Children

Free Range Child – Raising Children Connected To The Earth & Their Food (film sneak peek)

“As a child, one has that magical capacity to move among the many eras of the earth; to see the land as an animal does; to experience the sky from the perspective of a flower or a bee; to feel the earth quiver and breathe beneath us; to know a hundred different smells of mud and listen unself- consciously to the soughing of the trees.” -Valerie Andrews

Over Grow the System & Films For Action present Free Range Child: A documentary and media project that examines the connection between a child’s development and her or his connection to the natural world and to food production. It celebrates the lives of families and their support networks, both rural and urban, who are engaged in linking children with nature, and savours the bounty of precious moments of discovery, magic and growth that spring forth from these connections.

Partnering with children, parents, farmers, and professionals, we seek to better understand the contemporary circumstances that create alienation between children and the natural environment and the effects of this disconnect on their development. Conversely we’ll also examine the discourse and examples surrounding the raising of our children with access and engagement to natural and agricultural environments and how they are affected. We hope to learn how technology interacts or interferes with these connections and most significantly, what children, themselves, can teach us about the natural world and their place in it.

“Our Children no longer learn how to read the great book of Nature from their own direct experience, or how to interact creatively with the seasonal transformations of the planet. They seldom learn where their water come from or where it goes. We no longer coordinate our human celebration with the great liturgy of the heavens.” -Wendell Berry

Essential Oils

On Oregano Oil, it is considered a "hot oil" and should be used with caution. Please do your own research and look at several sights before using. I am not against oregano oil (I do have it in my essential oil arsenal), I just routinely find other oils effective that are less "hot", so I would say use it very sparingly. The spices Tumeric and Cayenne are excellent.

Melaleuka is "tea tree" oil which is an endocrine disruptor. It also should never be used "neat", and I don't personally subscribe to internal usage. Too much tea tree is disruptive to hormones and can cause "man boobs". So I am not a big fan of the "natural antibiotic blend" listed above, there is a lot you can do with safer natural foods/oils.

As an aside, it is not a great idea to use tea tree shampoo and/or soaps for daily use because of its hormonal effect. Tea tree is excellent against head lice and usually far more effective than storebought remedies. Good luck, be well.

The CDC: A Truly Corrupt and Dangerous Organization

Over the years, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has repeatedly deceived and lied to the public, yet they continue to state that their mission is to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S.

They boldly announce on their website that the “CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish our mission, CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise,” and yet there is more and more evidence to suggest that their so called ‘scientific evidence’ has been skewed and deliberately tampered with to gain the desired results. [1]

During the course of this article, I am going to give five recent examples of CDC fraud or deception. Each one of my examples will demonstrate when the CDC has deliberately altered or withheld scientific evidence in a bid to misinform the public.

Example #1: CDC Whistleblower Announces That the MMR Vaccine Causes Autism

Example #2: Fact – Thimerosal in Vaccinations Can Cause Children to Develop Tics

Example # 3: CDC Found to be Responsible for the Death of Thousands of Unborn Children

Example #4: The CDC Admitted That Polio Vaccinations Cause Polio but Promote Them Anyway

Finally – Example # 5: CDC Caught Changing the Risk Criteria for Ebola Transmission

The Bioethicist Turned Butcher

When Dan Honig was getting ready to slaughter a steer for the first time, he expected to feel devastated.

He was, after all, mostly vegetarian, eating meat only a few times per year. He’d double-majored in Philosophy and Environmental Ethics, and got a Master’s degree in Bioethics at New York University. During that time, he’d studied the ethics of meat-eating and animal welfare, and even written his master’s thesis on the subject. “I thought I’d be sniffling, thinking, I don’t want to kill you, I don’t want you to die,” he said. Instead, “I felt no remorse.”

Today, Honig, 25, is still mostly vegetarian. “The American food system is as wrong to animals as if I hit you in the face” he told me. “It’s a system of mass torture. It’s bad for the animals and it’s bad for us. It’s caused our obesity epidemic and drug-resistant microbes.” Honig, however, is also the co-founder, along with Alex Dimin, of Happy Valley Meat Company, which supplies beef to some of New York City’s most modish restaurants including Colonie and The Pines in Brooklyn and The Meatball Shop in Manhattan. He sees his business as part of the ethical answer to factory farms.

Honig was always an unlikely butcher. He grew up, not on a farm, but in suburban Malapan, NJ, where killing a steer is not on the typical teenager’s list of chores. He began his education at Franklin & Marshall, but was academically apathetic. Then he read On the Road by Jack Kerouac. “I hated it,” he said, “but it introduced me to Nietzsche.” Nietzsche, in turn, was Honig’s gateway drug into philosophy. Restless in Franklin & Marshall’s bucolic setting, Honig transferred to NYU both for its urban location and its philosophy department’s reputation as the best in the country.

Surprise! Study shows fluoridated water can calcify arteries

Fluoride is put in your drinking water 'for your teeth' without your consent, but did you know that it could also be calcifying your arteries?

A few years ago, we reported on a study evaluating a new diagnostic technology that inadvertently revealed a link between fluoride exposure and coronary artery disease. Our report stirred up quite a lot of controversy and criticism, even leading one of the most respected figures in alternative medicine (deservedly so) - Dr. Russell Blaylock -- to call us out on Infowars for our allegedly sophomoric interpretation of the following article: "Association of vascular fluoride uptake with vascular calcification and coronary artery disease." As one can see, the study's results revealed a hitherto largely unknown connection between fluoride exposure, coronary artery disease and cardiovascular events (e.g. heart attack).

"There was significant correlation between history of cardiovascular events and presence of fluoride uptake in coronary arteries. The coronary fluoride uptake value in patients with cardiovascular events was significantly higher than in patients without cardiovascular events."

The argument, at the time, was the study was simply about a new diagnostic technique and shouldn't be 'read into,' and that, presumably, the increased fluoride uptake value observed in patients with a higher frequency of cardiovascular events was a an 'effect' of the heart disease itself and not in any way indicative of fluoride's causative role as a cardiotoxic agent - despite the fact that fluoride's cardiotoxicity has already been consistently demonstrated in the biomedical literature.

Now, a provocative new study published in the journal Toxicology not only provides some vindication for our previous interpretations, but also raises serious concern over the cardiovascular complications associated with water fluoridation practices, showing for the first time that despite exhibiting an anti-calcification effect in vitro (cell model) fluoride exposure at levels found in people who drink fluoridated water exhibits artery-calcifying effects in the more important in vivo (animal) model.

Titled, Effect of water fluoridation on the development of medial vascular calcification in uremic rats, the study opens with a description of the common medical justification for public water fluoridation:

"In order to improve dental health in the population, fluoride is included in tooth pastes and mouthwash solutions or is added to public water supplies at 0.5 - 1.5 mg/L (WHO, 2008), which has been a common practice in some countries since 1945."

And yet, the study acknowledges that fluoride is a well-established toxicant that our body has to either incorporate into its tissues or excrete through the kidney's to sequester or eliminate:

The Beef Industry’s “Feedlot Feedback Loop”

The beef industry increasingly feeds cattle “poultry litter,” scraped from chicken coop floors, a practice that, as Brad Jacobson reported for OnEarth, “risks the spread of mad cow disease—yet the Food and Drug Administration [FDA] has done nothing to stop it.”

After a string of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (“mad cow disease”) scares in the 1980s and ’90s, many precautions were taken to prevent further outbreaks. Mad cow disease affects humans slowly but fatally, and cooking beef thoroughly does not get rid of the bacteria.

In 1997, the FDA made it illegal to feed dead cows to living cows, the main cause of the disease. In response to those laws, the beef industry teamed up with the poultry industry to exploit a major loophole in the 1997 law. Jacobson describes a “Feedlot Feedback Loop”: first, the poultry industry feeds the dead remains of cattle to chickens and other poultry; the mess created by poultry, known as “litter,” is then sold to the cattle producer who feed it to cattle that the public eventually consumes as beef.

In early 2003, the FDA proposed to ban the use of poultry litter as cattle feed. Big Agriculture opposed this, and the FDA revised its policy. Instead of a permanent ban, the FDA required chicken-feed manufacturers to agree that they would leave out the riskiest, most infectious bovine tissues.

Industry officials assert that there has been no rise in recorded cases of mad cow disease, but the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) tests less than 1 percent of the thirty-five million cattle slaughtered annually for the bacterium that causes mad cow disease, making industry claims especially difficult to assess.

Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime

Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime: How Big Pharma Has Corrupted Health Care

Peter Gøtzsche, MD

Peter Gøtzsche, MD

September 9, 2013

There are many good books about the crimes in the drug industry and the widespread corruption of the profession to which I belong; doctors. I had therefore promised myself that I would not write one. But two things in particular made me change my mind in the summer of 2012.

In 2007, PhD student Anders Jørgensen and I applied for access to trial protocols and clinical study reports for two slimming pills at the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Our request was flatly denied with the excuse that the documents could not be released because it would undermine commercial interests. We complained to the European ombudsman, and he agreed with us that these documents did not contain commercially confidential information. When, after 3 years, the agency was still completely resistant to our arguments and those of the ombudsman, he accused the EMA of maladministration. This caused the EMA to change its stance completely. Its director left the agency to consult for drug companies, and the new director introduced a far-reaching openness policy in accordance with the ombudsman’s wishes and in accordance with the principles on which the EU are based.

In 2012, I found out that the ten biggest drug companies in the world commit repeated and serious crimes to such a degree that they fulfill the criteria for organised crime under US law. I also found out how huge the consequences of the crimes are. They involve colossal thefts of public monies and they contribute substantially to the fact that our drugs are the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer.

I describe many therapeutic areas in my book, Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime: How Big Pharma Has Corrupted Health Care, and have come to the conclusion that psychiatric drugs are the most corrupted one. Psychiatry is the drug industry’s paradise as definitions of psychiatric disorders are vague and easy to manipulate, and as it is so easy to seemingly produce a positive effect, even for drugs that don’t work.

I devote two of the book’s 22 chapters to psychiatry and end the last chapter in this way:

“How come we have allowed drug companies to lie so much, commit habitual crime and kill hundreds of thousands of patients, and yet we do nothing? Why don’t we put those responsible in jail? Why are many people still against allowing citizens to get access to all the raw data from all clinical trials and why are they against scrapping the whole system and only allow publicly employed academics to test drugs in patients, independently of the drug industry?

“I know some excellent psychiatrists who help their patients a lot, e.g; David Healy uses watchful waiting before giving drugs to first-episode patients. I also know that some drugs can be helpful sometimes for some patients. And I am not ‘antipsychiatry’ in any way. But my studies in this area lead me to a very uncomfortable conclusion:

“Our citizens would be far better off if we removed all the psychotropic drugs from the market, as doctors are unable to handle them. It is inescapable that their availability creates more harm than good.”

You can read the second chapter, on psychiatry, on the publisher’s website.

From the Introduction:

‘The main reason we take so many drugs is that drug companies don’t sell drugs, they sell lies about drugs. This is what makes drugs so different from anything else in life… Virtually everything we know about drugs is what the companies have chosen to tell us and our doctors… the reason patients trust their medicine is that they extrapolate the trust they have in their doctors into the medicines they prescribe. The patients don’t realise that, although their doctors may know a lot about diseases and human physiology and psychology, they know very, very little about drugs that hasn’t been carefully concocted and dressed up by the drug industry… If you don’t think the system is out of control, then please email me and explain why drugs are the third leading cause of death… If such a hugely lethal epidemic had been caused by a new bacterium or a virus, or even one hundredth of it, we would have done everything we could to get it under control.’

Of further interest:

Richard Smith, Former Editor-in-Chief of the British Medical Journalreviews Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime: How Big Pharma Has Corrupted Healthcare

“Most of Peter’s book is devoted to building up the case that the drug industry has systematically corrupted science to play up the benefits and play down the harms of their drugs.

“As an epidemiologist with very high numerical literacy and a passion for detail, so that he is a world leader in critiquing clinical studies, Peter is here on very solid ground. He joins many others, including former editors of the New England Journal of Medicine, in showing this corruption.

“He shows too how the industry has bought doctors, academics, journals, professional and patient organisations, university departments, journalists, regulators, and politicians.

“These are the methods of the mob.”

"Big Pharma Drugs 'Must Not Be Used' Climb Down"

That the UK’s drug regulator the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency is corrupt is not difficult to demonstrate, as just this one previous CHS article demonstrates: UK Drug Safety Agency Falsified Vaccine Safety Data For 6 Million

The following article by Bob Fiddaman is another dramatic example and is reposted with permission:

Not Recommended Tuesday, July 15, 2014 Bob Fiddaman, FIDDAMAN BLOG

People that know me pretty much know that the words ‘not recommended’ mean absolutely nothing to me.

When used on drug information leaflets, ‘not recommended’ serves as a reminder to prescribing physicians that the drug they are about to prescribe to the patient is not recommended for them, be it because they don’t have an illness that the drug is indicated to treat or that it could be potentially dangerous.Last week British tabloid,The Mirror, ran with an article about pensioner Ron Sheppard.

Sheppard had been campaigning for almost 22 years to force changes to the way a steroid [Depo-Medrone] was used on millions of patients. And now, writes The Mirror“drug company Pfizer has applied to UK drug regulators to change the drug labelling.

“It is likely to be switched from “not recommended” for use in epidurals to “must not be used”.”

22 years on and now Pfizer decide that the drug must not be used in epidurals. It would appear that Pfizer know the difference between “not recommended” and “must not be used”, either that or they fear future lawsuits.

“Not recommended” is simply not good enough, particularly when it comes to children being prescribed antidepressants.

Alzheimer’s Linked to Pineal Gland Calcification from Flouride

Alzheimer’s disease is running rampant throughout the modern world now, but even with pharmaceutical companies spending billions on drugs to ‘cure’ it, they have failed miserably. While the use of coconut oil for Alzheimer’s disease is proving beyond beneficial, the answer to really treating this disease may lie in the pineal gland and the decalcification of one of the most important elements of the endocrine system.

For the past few decades, research into treating Alzheimer’s disease has been relegated to an assumption: that it is caused by the lack of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. In fact, most pharmaceuticals made to treat Alzheimer’s patients are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (drugs that inhibit the enzyme that breaks this neurotransmitter down.)

Big Pharma Fails to Treat Alzheimer’s

These drugs have produced only palliative results, if any, and many of them cause seizures or other neurological issues in the patients who take them. As Sayer Ji from GreenMedInfo so convincingly points out, Alzheimer’s drugs are nothing but patented xenobiotic chemicals, completely alien to human physiology. So – if this is the case, it makes sense to look deeper into the causes of such a prevalent disease which is said to be ‘bigger than cancer’ for the pharmaceutical markets.

Despite failed trials, Big Pharma continues to invest heavily in ‘cures’ that may not do anything but worsen the disease.

For instance, trials of Eli Lilly’s gamma-secretase inhibitor, semagacestat (LY450139), were halted due to below par results. Later, despite reports that results of solanezumab, a neuroprotector that binds to plaque and inhibits its formation, were positive, the company said that it was not going to the FDA for approval, but will conduct a third Phase III trial. The company has already failed three times at creating a “inhibitor that would address this disease effectively.

These attempts are in the company of other failed pharmaceutical projects:

  • In 2011, Bristol-Myers Squibb tried to develop a gamma-secretase inhibitor (BMS-708163. Test results were less than promising.
  • In 2012, Pfizer announced that it was abandoning further development of intravenous formulations of bapineuzumab, an anti-amyloid antibody, after the failure of its Phase II study.
  • In 2013, Baxter International reported that its immune-bolstering treatment had ended in a failure after trying to create a drug called Gammagard out of components of the human immune system. It also failed at removing amyloid plaques from the brain.

Boy Gets Diagnosed with Autism After 32 Shots

Like millions of parents before her, Natalie Steffen was faced with her children receiving pediatric vaccines starting after birth and during subsequent well child visits. This story is one mother’s journey to exempt her children from further vaccinations.

Natalie gave birth to her firstborn daughter Skylar in October 2004. Skylar received all the shots on the schedule, starting with the hepatitis B vaccine, given within the first 12 hours of life. Skylar reacted to the vaccines, but her parents didn’t know their daughter was suffering side effects and adverse reactions to them.

This is How the Nightmare Began

After her first hep B shot, Skylar immediately began to suffer from colic. Up until age one, she would cry every night at the same time for about an hour and a half before she went to sleep. She had horrible night terrors from age 2-4 years before these finally ceased.

When Natalie had Skylar, she had no idea vaccine injuries were prevalent and never thought to question this link. Skylar’s pediatrician said this behavior was normal and led her to believe this is what normal babies go through.

Natalie gave birth to her second child, Landen, in 2009, four years later. He was also given the hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours of life and started receiving the vaccines on schedule. Landen was born perfectly healthy. Once he started receiving the vaccinations on schedule, he suffered from the toxins. His reactions were much more severe. He was reaching the typical milestones until he was given the MMR, Varicella and flu shots at his 14 month pediatric visit, and by 18 months old, he lost everything and was later diagnosed with autism.

In Natalie’s words, this is what happened to her son after he received those shots at 14 months old:

  • “Landen lost all his speech (he can parrot now here and there)
  • He stems by running back-and-forth
  • He flaps, raising his arms and screaming
  • He chews on everything including wood and walls
  • He is still not potty trained and is now 5 years old
  • He went through a stage where he would smear his feces all over himself and the walls
  • He is relearning to eat with utensils
  • He is constantly plugging his ears
  • He had horrific tantrums for 2 years, but now instead of tantrum meltdowns, when his surroundings are too loud, he goes into a laughing state in which he drops onto the ground and laughs uncontrollably
  • He hums when he is eating
  • He has an extremely high level of pain tolerance
  • 50 percent of the time, he walks on his tippy toes
  • He is constantly jumping or moving very quickly
  • He can walk through the house repeatedly without looking while touching the same objects
  • He breaks and eats his toys instead of playing with them
  • He flips all his toys and furniture upside down (we had to move all the furniture out of his bedroom except his bed)
  • He always wants to eat and can eat as much as my husband
  • He has no sense of fear or what is dangerous
  • He will take off running without looking at any moment”

All of these symptoms hit Landen at 18 months of age after receiving the MMR, Varicella, and flu shots. He had received a total of 32 shots before he was diagnosed with autism by age three, and that was when Natalie finally figured out that the vaccines were the source of her children’s ill health.

the Creepy Ties Between Pharmaceutical Companies and doctors

On Tuesday, the federal government released details of payments to doctors by every pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturer in the country. The information is being made public under a provision of the 2010 Affordable Care Act. The law mandates disclosure of payments to doctors, dentists, chiropractors, podiatrists and optometrists for things like promotional speaking, consulting, meals, educational items and research.

It's not quite clear what the data will show — in part because the first batch will be incomplete, covering spending for only a few months at the end of 2013 — but we at ProPublica have some good guesses. That's because we have been detailing relationships between doctors and the pharmaceutical industry for the past four years as part of our Dollars for Docs project.

We've aggregated information from the websites of some large drug companies, which publish their payments as a condition of settling federal whistle-blower lawsuits alleging improper marketing or kickbacks. In cooperation with the website Pharmashine, we've added data for 2013, which now covers 17 drug companies accounting for half of United States drug sales that year. (You can look up your doctor using our easy search tool.)

Here are some facts we've learned from the data:

1. Many, many health professionals have relationships with industry.

Below are the approximate numbers of health professionals who received some payment from each company in 2013, excluding research. We based this on the number of unique names, cities and states per company.

CompanyDoctors PaidPfizer142,600AstraZeneca111,200Forest98,900Johnson & Johnson97,000GlaxoSmithKline85,100AbbVie82,900Boehringer Ingelheim82,900Merck81,300Eli Lilly79,000Novartis64,500Amgen50,500Valeant21,200UCB21,200Cephalon*14,600EMD Serono7,900ViiV3,400

Note: Dollars for Docs only includes data for Cephalon from the first six months of 2013.

Dollars for Docs now includes 3.4 million payments since 2009, totaling more than $4 billion, of which $2.5 billion was for research. For 2013 alone, there were 1.2 million payments valued at nearly $1.4 billion.

It's not possible to calculate the exact number of physicians represented, because drug companies haven't used unique identification numbers that cross company lines. But it's clear that the figure is in the hundreds of thousands.

Excluding research payments, the drugmaker Pfizer appeared to have interactions with the most healthcare professionals last year — about 142,600. AstraZeneca came in second with about 111,200. Johnson & Johnson and Forest Labs each had nearly 100,000. There are an estimated 800,000 to 900,000 active doctors in the United States.

"Most physicians that are in private practice are touched in some way" by the industry, said George Dunston, co-founder of Obsidian HDS, the creator of Pharmashine. "You add that up and it's a pretty significant number."

Surveys conducted in 2004 and again in 2009 showed that more than three-quarters of doctors had at least one type of financial relationship with a drug or medical device company. The figure dropped from about 94 percent in 2004 to 84 percent in 2009, said the lead author, Eric Campbell, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and director of research at the Mongan Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital.
