Starting Fresh

The updated TFMR is up and running!

As you've no doubt noticed, the revamped TFMR is a complex beast. There are all sorts of updates and added capabilities and this will make the experience for all of us here even better.

The old site was built on a Drupal platform in 2011 and a lot has changed over the years as technology has surged forward. Think of trying to use your 2011 Blackberry to access all of 2018's apps and websites. Going forward, our new site will eliminate the issues we've had with Apple products. It was also end the frustrating cycle of forced logins/logouts. It also has complete mobile capability. And a whole bunch more new stuff that I don't even know about yet.

So, thank you for your patience as we work out the bugs and get acquainted with everything. New and improved can sometimes feel frustrating and unnecessary, however, in this case, it was completely necessary and worthwhile.

As you know, I'm away from Turdfork this weekend as MrsF and I are visiting LT#1 at college. (And boy-oh-boy do I have a raging headache today from too many beers at the local Oktoberfest last evening!) I had promised everyone a podcast this morning but, frankly, I don't know yet how to post one! So, just this quick update.

In Comex gold, It was great to see price close at $1230 yesterday. That's another GREEN weekly candle and maintaining above $1200 and $1220 is very important in terms of a bullish/hopeful chart configuration. For next week, the goal remains a close above the 100-day moving average and then $1240 as this will engender even more Spec short-covering.

And as you can see on the gold CoT below, a MASSIVE move in Spec short-covering already took place back on Thursday the 11th when price surged through the 50-day and ended up $34 on the day. We'll discuss this more on Monday.

In Comex silver, that reverse H&S we've been discussing continue to trace out. On the weekly chart, getting back above and staying back above $14.50 is seemingly an important development. As expected, the move in the silver CoT wasn't nearly as dramatic as it was in gold.

Again, thank you for your patience as we get restarted and Ron and his team work out any kinks that suddenly appear. Have a great weekend and I look forward to next week.

Mr. TF:

Mr. TF: Congratulations on the new site. Well done. I enjoy the upgrades, especially the white space and the font. I read a lot, tons, actually, and the most important thing for me to be able read quickly is to have a great font, and lots of white space around it. You succeeded. As for the rest of the gizmos and upgrades, well, I expect I will just have to play around with it while watching college football today. Again, thanks for everything you do, and congrats on the new site!

"comments? tough to read grey font on a white background"

A couple of comments on this. First, the idea is to set a color that doesn't strain the eyes too much. If it is too black, it hurts after a while of looking at it. That's why neither newspapers nor books are printed with black ink.

Second, the font color (as well as most every other setting of this site) is now under the control of Big TF himself. This is not just a website, but a platform for customizing a website experience.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The searches on TFMR have nothing to do with Google. We're not using Google Search... we have our own search engine built into the platform.

I would expect Google Search and Google Ads are tied to each other and do data sharing because they are part of the same company, but that has nothing to do with TFMR.

Just an FYI to everyone, if you don't see your comment show up immediately after it is posted, this is due to us trying to speed up page load by rendering the last saved version. The new comment will be shown live in a couple of minutes.

We're making changes and adjustments to try to balance between immediate posts and overall site performance, and will take us some time to get those items worked out. Thank you for your patience.

As I mentioned in the other post, we're not using Google Search. We have our own built-in search engine. I recommend giving it a try, it's pretty slick. However, it still has a ways to go until it has every old piece of content indexed for searching... right now it is about 50% done.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! And another HA Craig can't post on his own website. Not that it's a big deal I'm just being a jackass as usual. He'll figure it out before I figure out how to set my VCR time from 12.00 PM

I cant scrub my name so I guess that makes me an FTurd-tard. No worries. A new site is like a new wife Takes some getting use to but she'll beat us senseless until she gets us in line. Know what I mean? Not that I know about breaking in a new wife. Mine's still break me in. No wonder she doesn't like taking me shopping. The eye strain is less. My eyes are 1,500 year old given all the close work I've done since age 6. Surprised I can see my hand in front of my face. Glasses need to up graded. Now they're 2 inches thick. Mr Magoo, here we come.

Best to all Keep stackin' I wonder how the real Jackass, Jim Willie, will think of the site. It's been a while since he's done a drive by.

For everyone saying their

For everyone saying their name is being displayed and/or they do not know how to change their name:

1) The name is displayed because at some point in the past you entered it on your profile. This information has *always* been publicly available to the members of this site. All we did is pull that information into the new profile.

2) If you want to change it or remove it, click the "Profile" link at the very top bar when logged in. It will take you to the page where you can modify all your profile information (picture, name, "about me", location, etc.)

3) We refresh this information on the site only every few minutes to speed up the overall experience. So if you update it on the profile, it will take a few before you start seeing it changed everywhere else.

As it has been mentioned a couple of times, this is not a website... it is a platform for building personalized website experiences. A "star" is the default setting.

Well, we are a bit concerned.

Well, we are a bit concerned. The old site was just wonderful, easy to use, easy to post and paste and I already miss it. There are surly good reasons for the new site but the old one was really a great one.

Hopefully, we will have the paste working in time. "If" this site becomes user unfriendly, we have lost much and it may take time to regain the posters. I do have a couple of great articles that I would have posted today but nothing will work.

It reminds me of the early '50's after buying something which says "Made in Japan". (Ya have to be born in the '40's to understand. Jim

So I've seen a few comments regarding JavaScript. I'm curious to know what you are experiencing? Did you click "Accept" for the bar at the bottom when first visiting the site?

As of right now, the new site is taking a *very* conservative approach to the EU GDPR compliance. That means if you don't accept cookies, there are a lot of things you will be blocked from accessing. This doesn't mean TFMR is doing anything bad, quite the contrary. It all depends on possible interpretations of the EU law.

How conservative or liberal the site handles this is ultimately a choice for Craig. As I said, right now it's pretty conservative, which at times is going to cause issues for how easy the site is to use for new visitors.

I'm not sure I understand. What do you mean unable to paste? There should be no issue with pasting. Can you tell me, are you seeing a bar at the top of the comments that allows you to bold text, add an image, add a smiley, etc.?

Also did you accept cookies when visiting the site the first time? It is a bar displayed at the bottom of every page.

Reversion to mean would send

Reversion to mean would send monetary metals soaring!

9:44a ET Saturday, October 20, 2018

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

Our friend Lawrence Lepard, managing partner of Equity Management Associates in Wellesley, Massachusetts, whose investments have been concentrated in the monetary metals mining industry, has just sent a letter to his investors outlining the case for an upward reversal in the industry's fortunes.

Lepard's letter may be most interesting for showing that the monetary metals are now priced far below traditional valuations and for arguing that any reversion to the mean would be explosive.

Perhaps most telling is the letter's chart showing the sharp break in 2011 in the historic correlation between the gold price and the U.S. national debt -- a break that powerfully implies urgent official intervention against a rising gold price.

Lepard has kindly allowed GATA to share the letter with you and so it is posted in PDF format here:

"Admin how about a short tutorial for us thick bastards...??"

Here are the key changes:

  • User profile info has been moved to its own tab (accessible at the top through the "Profile" link)
  • Credit card info can be updated through its own tab in the user profile (under "Stored Cards")
  • There is a new "Features" tab in the user account that displays all the benefits given to subscribers. For example, you can now load all TFMR podcasts into a personalized iTunes feed
  • Every comment has a little "chart" icon that links to TradingView. On TradingView you can create all types of charts, and then link it into a comment so it shows up for display.
  • Search engine is now part of the site (I recommend giving it a try)
  • Navigation at the top is fixed, and to better manage its size, some of the menu items have moved into the "+" dropdown menu.
  • Home page has a different layout

Everything else is pretty much the same, just looks a little different.

Pages are laid out the same way, content is in the same places, URLs are the same, user accounts are the same.

Is there anything in particular you're noticing or want me to comment on? I think probably it is more of a visual "shock" with the different colors, font, etc. but 95% of the old TFMR is here, and located in the same places.

"With the old site, whenever I logged into TFMR, I could see every post (blogs/podcasts) and each showed how may new comments I had not read."

Yes, this was considered. Let me try to explain this as best as I can in not-too-technical terms. If I'm getting too technical, let me know.

Personalization of website information is always filled with tradeoffs. For example, the top bar on the site shows your username and links to your user account. Everyone else has that same bar at the top, but it is filled with their info. This information doesn't change all that frequently, so it is easy for us to store one of those for every person on the site.

Regarding number of new comments, it is a hyper-personalized piece of information. Facebook, Twitter, etc. do not have such a feature, and there is a good reason why they do not. Not only does it need to be kept track of for each user, it needs to be tracked for each user on each post throughout the entirety of history. So say you have 100,000 posts and 100,000 users, that is *10 billion* times where number of comments needs to be tracked -- and that data is constantly changing.

Our goal is to grow this site much beyond its current size, and having that level of hyper-personalization runs into conflict with having a lot more people on TFMR.

There are potentially some ways we could consider doing this in the future, but we would need to hear from Craig that he considers this a priority.
