In Defense of Coconut Oil:

In Defense of Coconut Oil: Rebuttal to USA Today

By now, I'm sure you've seen the USA Today article entitled, "Coconut oil isn't healthy. It's never been healthy". Fear-mongering, attention-grabbing headlines certainly sell copy, but do not make for evidence-informed, high quality science reporting.

As I expressed in my recent post on social media,

check out the references and foot notes..

USA Today, please read post above about false news in the Philippines..

Yellow Stone Expert?

Hummm.. only thing is this expert sites a 600 million year eruption event when the Yellow Stone eruption cycle is about every 630 thousand years and we're over due now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_Caldera

================================================================

He continues: “I PHOTOGRAPHED THE ENTIRE GEO -THERMAL AREA WITH A GYRO STABILIZED EXTREMELY SHARP LENSED,RENTED 500,000.00 “SHOT OVER CAMERA” FOR 2 DAYS-AND NOTICED NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY, THEREFORE AFTER 40 PLUS YEARS OF TERRESTRIAL AND AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY OVER YELLOWSTONE PARK THE 600 MILLION YEAR ERUPTION IS THE LEAST OF YOUR CONCERNS-PREPARE FOR FOOD DISAPPEARANCE ,CIVILIAN UNREST AND EXTENDED PERIODS AND LACK AND AVAILABILITY OF EVERYTHING.”

"ERUPTION IS THE LEAST OF YOUR CONCERNS...." Right

Bill filed vs. fake news: Up

Bill filed vs. fake news: Up to ₱10M fine, 10-year jail time for erring public officials

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 22) - A bill seeking to penalize those who spread fake news was filed in the Senate – and it wants stiffer penalties for erring government officials.

Senator Joel Villanueva, a member of the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media, filed on Tuesday Senate Bill No. 1492, entitled an "An Act Penalizing the Malicious Distribution of False News and Other Related Violations."

The bill defines false news as information which "intend to cause panic, division, chaos, violence, and hate, or those which exhibit a propaganda to blacken or discredit one's reputation."

Under the bill, violators will face a fine of up to ₱5 million, and imprisonment of up to 5 years.

"If the offender is a public official, he or she will be made to pay twice the said amount of fine, and twice the period of imprisonment; and absolute disqualification from holding any public office," Villanueva said in a statement.

This is tantamount to a fine of up to ₱10 million and imprisonment of up to 10 years.

Those found to have aided or encouraged the spread of fake news will be fined up to ₱3 million, and imprisoned for up to three years. Any media platform who fails to regulate and remove fake news will be punished with a fine of up to ₱20 million and a 10-year jail time.

Public officials who commit any of these violations shall face twice the amount of fine and twice the number of years in prison.

"The recent events involving our public officials who failed to validate information that resulted to the spread of false information make matters worse. The proliferation of fake news should not be tolerated especially when the public interest is at stake," Villanueva said.

Wouldn't this bill be great to have in the US? Think of all the news agencies with sentences for fake news..

Why is it a third world country is leading the way in Truth Reporting?

Thank you Doc and Pining

Been around since the 2012. Around Memorial Day 2017, I cancelled my TFM subscription because I was tired of the threads being high jacked away from the metals. Your conversation reminded me why I originally was attracted to this community and I am going to continue my subscription.

Like many of us, I am amazed and frustrated how everything continues to be held together. After 30 years in the financial services industry, I left in 2012. I was on the front lines and I thought everything was coming down. By all metrics, it's worse today; but, it continues. I have adjusted my behavior like you have to make my investing and prepping part of a normal life. It's comforting to be in this lifeboat with this community. Also, I am going to hang around just to be a part of the inaugural Turdapaloosa.

Again, thank you.

More fun and games?

Today will be one of the biggest and busiest trading days in the U.S. equity market as investment managers adjust their portfolios to the rebalancing of Russell indexes. Why is it so important? Indexes rule the world because passive investing rules the world, and these indexes determine what go into many mutual funds and many ETFs. There's about $8.5T in assets benchmarked to or invested in products based on Russell U.S. indexes.

Happy Anniversary @SteveW

Your 50th will be blessed.

It is not often these days that a couple belong together for such a long time. Give her a kiss from me in appreciation if you can stand to share. Or a handshake. Your choice.

Hobbies and lifestyle

Hearing about canning the fruits of your orchard took me back 30/35 years when I had a young family. I would regularly can fruit in the summer and early fall and make garlic dills (used to clean them in the washing machine with few breakages), besides having a very small garden at the end of my small urban lot.

My hobby though was making wine, something I have recently given up at the age of 73 because the 40-50 lb carboys are becoming far too heavy for me to handle.

We are just embarking on a new stage in life having just sold our detached house (for a ridiculous metro-Vancouver price) and are moving into an apartment (for an equally ridiculous metro-Vancouver price). At my age I was unable to get a bank mortgage (income based) and so planned a shadow lender mortgage (asset based on the both properties). This was at 6.95% plus a 2% fee. With my wife wanting a place before we sold and not make two moves I was placed in this situation, which would have been quite a blow to my finances. Fortunately we sold the detached house quickly (they are not selling as easily as prime apartment property) and have it structured to close the day before we pay for the apartment.

So today I mentioned that the buyer of our house has a 35% down payment and she asks how do I know that. I said "don't you read the contracts you sign? it's in the sales agreement." She is financially naive so I don't burden her with any of the economic crap which is good, since she doesn't bother me about my silver investments. She is half Scottish and has always been frugal so our money has not been wasted (except for my poor investments).

It will be good to get to one level living as she has a spinal fusion from T4 to the sacrum and is having a hip replacement in just over a month after we return from our 50th anniversary holiday.
