Open Season on Turd
Every once in a while, someone will stop by to declare that all I ever do is "beg for donations". Up until today, that simply wasn't true. Unfortunately, now I'm left with no other choice.
This "Turd" stuff is a lot of fun and I have certainly benefited from it, both financially and personally. However it has, over time, turned into a business and to stay afloat, businesses have to bring in more money than they spend. To that end, I've undertaken four initiatives this year:
- Affiliation with a bullion, coin and storage service.
- Marketing of homepage advertisements.
- "Turd's Army" partnership with Andrew Maguire and Coghlan Capital.
- Development of TurdTalksMetals.
It was my hope that these initiatives, when combined with Google Adsense revenue growth, would allow TFMR to not only be profitable but grow and expand. Unfortunately, this hasn't gone according to plan (hopes).
- The affiliation with HardAssetsAlliance only just began last Friday.
- I've been able to "sell" just two homepage ads. These ads currently generate $650/month in revenue but are, of course, subject to cancellation and renewal.
- General lack of interest in trading has led to only a handful of Turdites joining "The Army".
- Delays, technical issues and merchant provider/processing problems have left TTM with less than 200 subscribers so far.
And, after 15 months of a brutal silver market and 12 months of pain in gold, overall site traffic is down quite a bit. From a peak of 30,000+ unique visitors per day last summer, traffic has been nearly cut in half. Because of that, Google ad revenue has been cut by more than 50%, too.

But expenses for running such a popular site continue unabated. Each month, I pay almost $1000 for servers that allow all of us to post nearly anything we feel is relevant. I also pay nearly $2000/month for tech and moderation support.
And then there are issues like the bot/DDOS attack last February that exposed holes in our platform and brought down the entire site for 36 hours. To fix this and to implement changes that would prevent a recurrence cost me $3675. Other unforeseen issues invariably spring up each month, adding $500-$1000 in additional expenses.
Anyway, my point in sharing this with you is this:
TFMR, in its current form, isn't working. The plus side of the ledger only includes the Google and direct ads as well as the affiliation revenue. The minus side includes all of the server and tech costs as well as anything else that might crop up. In total, this site is either losing money or barely scraping by so, from a personal standpoint, I have to make some decisions.
- First, I need some more donations. The TFMR bank account only has about $1,500 in it and I am past due with Ron to the tune of about $8,000. My plan/hope is to pay this down with TTM revenue but, with only 200 subscribers at about $7/month profit, it's going to take a while. Therefore, I'm asking for some help.
- The last time I asked (begged) for donations, a number of folks signed up for $5 or $10 recurring monthly donations. This was very nice and much appreciated. Unfortunately, once TTM went live, many of these same folks apparently decided that TFMR must not need cash anymore because they subsequently discontinued their payments.
- IF you feel that this is a beneficial site and worthwhile endeavor, please help support it. Contrary to myth and legend, The Turd is not some kind of independently wealthy, semi-retired ex-trader. If TFMR and TTM cannot be made into profitable enterprises, I will be forced to make some hard choices.
Possibilities going forward include:
- My plan was, and still is, to keep TFMR as a completely free-of-charge, educational and community-oriented website. If site traffic can get back to where it was (a hot, explosive and historic summer would certainly help), ad revenue will increase sequentially. Perhaps the assorted affiliations will grow, too. And, if I can make TTM grow, the revenue there will help to compensate for the shortfalls of revenue here at TFMR.
- But I have to consider whether, perhaps, this entire TFMR idea was a mistake. One possible solution would be to migrate back to blogspot where there are no server or tech fees each month. In theory this sounds nice but we'd also lose all of the things that we've come to take for granted here such as podcasts, forums and moderation.
- Unfortunately, I also have to consider shuttering TFMR and the blogspot sites entirely and moving everything to the subscription-only platform at TTM. This is the advice I consistently receive from folks who only see all of this as a business. Look at all of the newsletter and subscription sites that are out there...from Prechter, to Ackerman, to Maund, to Butler...I could go on and on. They all make money. Lots of it. And none of them have to deal with the day-to-day issues that we have here.
So, anyway, I've got a lot of thinking to do. First and foremost, though, I need some help. Every donation I've ever received has been met with a sincere and personal thank you and this shall be no different. Please help if you can.
I suppose I could post this as "read only" so that I don't have to see all of the "Turd is a greedy SOB" comments that will most assuredly follow. I'm not going to, though. As always, the comments section is yours to say and post whatever you'd like (as long as it's civil). Call me what you want, post your condolences and/or subject me to scorn and ridicule, I don't care. I'm fair game and it's open season. Have at it.
Thanks to everyone who has made this possible for the past 2 years. We'll see where we go from here and, as always, I'll keep you posted.

Good Karma to the Turdman
Turd, thanks for all you do
I'm not sure that I see a huge difference between the "blog" format and what you have now. I would think you could combine a blogspot and Youtube videos to get much of what you want to accomplish without some of the frills.
The biggest positives are your posts and the community here. It just seems to me that it shouldn't require all the expensive servers and moderators. Ban the trolls as they pop up and use more free services.
That said, I'll try to send some money.
Don't quit man
That's pretty stark Turd. You have my respect and support as always. Tried to join your triple T just now but your merchant provider wouldn't accept me. So I donated the equivalent amount to this site for now. Keep on truckin in these interesting times, we're in for the ride of our lifetimes. Not looking forward to the hate and discontent coming our way.

Let's see how the summer call goes. If you're right you can retire. I'm sure we all kick in.
Server bill way too high
I work as a web developer and have produced dozens of websites, and can corroborate the fact that your bills are way too high. How can we ask the US government to spend within their means and not do it ourselves? Would you ask that all Americans pay more taxes as well to support the high costs of government? I don't mean to offend, but you have a bloated spending problem. You should definitely look into ways to lower costs before asking everyone to start spending more. If you contact me, I can hook you up for a much better price, both in terms of server fees and most likely web development. I would much rather help you fix the problem, than to give money away to a cause that I cannot affect.
Horst, it's not the content....
...of your posts, it's the packaging.
There's that whole 'be civil' thing. Your tone is/was basically dickish, and no amount of content makes up for it. Nobody wants to listen to dickish.
Thanks
When TTM came out I shut down my monthlies at TFMR and became a year-at-a-whack member at TTM. I just turned my monthly donation back on, hardly ever go to TTM. TFMR is the site that rocks.
I like to read comments/recent when I arrive, wish ignore would work when I viewed that way. It is a rare day when news from zerohedge and the world (that I want to read) doesn't appear here almost immediately. (I hat-tip the "new thread" posters because I don't want to miss anything you write)
It seems to me you are paying too much for servers and support, you might have luck with volunteers (and vetted hosting companies) from your tech-heavy followers.

Charge Everyone $5 Lifetime Fee
If you're getting 15-30k unique visitors a month, a one time $5 a member lifetime fee will create a big buffer for your site expenses. I would gladly pay this. A few people will bitch at you, but who cares, its likely that they contribute nothing but noise anyway. If you're worried that a fee might prevent new members from signing up on the site, go with a free 30 all access trial. Inevitably a few people will game the system and create new accounts each month but most of us are not so pathetic. I also agree with some members that you can probably cut your monthly expenses down.
@bam
Respectfully, if Horst's advice contains a solution that will save Turd $10,000, does it ultimately matter in order to achieve the near-term goal? We'd all feel real dumb if it did and we just ignored it because we didn't like how he said it. I'm not saying it does and it will. And nobody is saying Horst couldn't do better in his word selection. Sometimes if a feasible solution to a problem is clear to us, we have to spit it out abruptly or we lose it. I quit working with the emotionally-driven long ago who insisted on backscratching over keeping their eyes on the big picture. Sort of like the fallacy of putting art before science.
Anyway, I seemed to get into a pissing contest over this concept the other day so this will be the only time I say it here. FWIW.
lots of good ideas tonight
I agree that it should be just a blog with the occasional YouTube video and podcast. Make the free part as inexpensive as possible to run - keep the adsense ads. Make everything else (registering, posting, forums, etc) behind a moderate paywall. Maybe $5 or $10 a month with a yearly discount.
... my sarcastic-ass wife wanted to chime in with her two cents... "why don't you sell some of your silver...oh wait...it's worth less now than what you paid for it."
Lucky me. I am also accepting donations to deal with my crazy ass old lady.
@Turd on Egypt
The current battle in the Middle East is really a continuation of the ‘Arab Spring’ that started last year. It is reaching a culmination in the battle for Syria. This, at its core, is really a battle between the Shia and Sunni factions of the Muslim world for control of the Middle East.
The Shia are the Radicals, they read, believe, and follow the Koran. They are the ones that saw off the heads of ‘infidels’ like Michel Pearl with a dull knife. They are real, and committed to the destruction of Israel and the spread of Shiria law throughout the world. Believe it.
The Shia factions dominate Iran, Syria, and now Egypt, that why Egypt just now moved their tanks up to Israel’s border. The moderate factions are the Sunnis, which represent are the Saudis and Qatar, We back the latter and the USSR and China the former, that’s why you see everyone and their brother gathering around that area.
Bashar al - Assad are Alawites, which is a secretive sect that dates back to the 9th century, they are very occultic, they are not really Muslims but yet hold power, The Alawies does allow women to participate in religious services and see them, mostly only for breeding.
How are these rebels getting the heavy weaponry to take on a very impressive military like Syria’s.?? They are getting it from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, though Turkey, that why the jet was shot down as a warning a few weeks ago
And where do the Saudis’ get do their armaments from?? America, of course. Who is backing the Syrians??… Russia, and China. This is not looking good.
Should Assad feel he is about to fall from power, he will strike Israel, possibly with chemical weapons in a final attempt to unify the Muslim world against and greater ‘Zionist’ enemy of Israel.
Israel will deal Damascus a crushing and devastating response.
How about this sample Wordpress TFMR site
Ok, Just click around and forgive some sloppiness (like the logo). This is just an example of what can be done on short notice with free stuff. There are more free themes to choose from. I just picked this one as a best guess at mimicking the current site. (Both ways of rating posts are shown for comparisson.

Turd, if you send me an email, I can "invite" you as an administrator so you can check out the guts from an admin point of view. (Or just make your owm WordPress account. The admin guts are mostly the same no matter what theme is used.
There are plug ins that seem to deal with subscriptions easily but they only work via http://wordpress.org/ (Looks like you run wordpress on it's own server..) Here is one example: "The s2Member® Framework (free) integrates with PayPal® Website Payments Standard (also free), and fully supports recurring billing." http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/s2member/

Good pics. No wonder the closing ceremony was so full of occult symbolism: the Babylonian satanists are about to get they've always wanted (and they will be extremely sorry too).

@Turd Overhead will kill you,,,,,
I gotta agree with Vagabond: Give him and/or one of the others a PM & see what they can do "price wise or recommend" AND I don't know them from Adam; but when I'm costing out a project especially these days I don't necessarily go with the low cost provider, just the more reasonable one. And I look at multiple offers and a seamless transition is a must.
Here in the wonderful CA economy I've had to make tough decisions to get the overhead down. I'm talking 100k+ here in my situation over the last 4 years. I'm not bitching about it; I just made it happen or I was going to close up shop. People you are comfortable with are great; right up until they're taking advantage of you. I have to agree with other posters that your paying WAAAAY too much in expenses. It can be done for a lot less, reliably/credibly. Quite frankly there are a lot of internet providers out there that would want the kind of traffic you have.
Please give this some thought. I hate to see people being taken advantage of especially when their hearts in the right place.
I do contribute, but I believe contributing to the person directly responsible for the content verses contributing to people that I believe are taking advantage of someone makes it harder to contribute.
@Dagney
Thing is, it takes literally no effort to state your case simply without sarcasm, snark, sneering comments or whatever. In fact, it is more "abrupt" to leave those out. Those negative accouterments actually require extra work. They are unnecessary. And they detract from the argument on top of that.
So when they are included, the natural response is "why"? (rather than focusing on "what")
Monedas
Interesting suggestion, but haven't you heard of tungsten filled "gold" bars.
I'll leave the assay (can't believe I wrote that!!!) method to you to describe.
Let The Free Be Free
TF, after nearly two years I am a bit surprised that you haven't used either this or the old blogspot platforms for a modestly priced monthly newsletter. Not to preach to the choir but one of a more in depth coverage of not only your views on the metals but also on everything that goes to influencing the metals market. After all, it's a big mad mad world and the metals are probably the only market that reflects all of it. The daily posts are just that, daily. And there are puhlenty of those around.
I must agree with the posters experienced in tech and hosting that you are getting hosed. I'm sure those costs are inflated to you just because of your sites subject - gold and precious metals. Look at GATA, are those guys wealthy beyond ones dreams because they bang on about gold? I don't know but I'd bet most people think they are.
Whatever you decide just remember to thine own self be true.
I just sent some money to a family member in need...
...but if you can hold off shutting the place down for another week or so I'll be happy to blow my next paycheck's mad money on a donation. You gotta do what you gotta do, but I for one would have a big hole in my life if this place went away.
Peace.

Wordpress; Programming costs
Turd, The organization I head runs several Wordpress-platform sites, including ecommerce modules -- all based on Wordpress platforms. You do NOT need to be a Wordpress jockey/junkey in order to use these platforms. And, the platform allows for great variety in presentation, graphics, and so forth. Fees for programming? Fees for someone to maintain the site (backups, modifying stuff as your preferences change) -- as little as $10-15 an hour for very high-end programming, done by highly competent Phillapino contractors (we use one). For some service businesses, the market has become international -- and blogging and website platforms is one of the areas where North American and Western European service providers have become out-priced by skilled workers who operate in economic environments which are orders of magnitude less expensive than in North America and Western Europe. oDesk brokers literally millions of billable hours every month between American employers (individuals and companies) and Phillapino service-providers. If interested in further details of our experience here, contact me privately and ask away.

If you want to be truly 'politically correct' they are 'Babylonian Luciferian's' but why spit hairs?? Like you definition.
And you are absolutely right!!! but there is NOTHING you can do about that fact. that they are "about to get what they have alway's wanted"

You write:
"The Shia are the Radicals, they read, believe, and follow the Koran. They are the ones that saw off the heads of ‘infidels’ like Michel Pearl with a dull knife. They are real, and committed to the destruction of Israel and the spread of Shiria law throughout the world. Believe it."
I think you got this one wrong. All practicing muslims read, believe and follow the Quran. You will find radicals, that kidnap and behead prisoners in both camps. The hardline and also less hardline Sunnis are equally passionate about living according to Sharia, since it is the underlying law of Islam spelled out in the Quran and the Sunnah. You will not find much love for Israel among people in Saudi or Qatar either.
"The Shia factions dominate Iran, Syria, and now Egypt, that why Egypt just now moved their tanks up to Israel’s border. The moderate factions are the Sunnis, which represent are the Saudis and Qatar, We back the latter and the USSR and China the former, that’s why you see everyone and their brother gathering around that area."
As far as I know, power in Egypt has been won by the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood is predominantly Sunni, if I remember correctly. I believe that you are correct in your view that Qatar is (predominantly) moderate in their practise of Islam, but there are still a rather conservative faction that the Emir has to balance his more moderate policies with. The law in Qatar is based on Sharia principles and the doctrine is Wahabiism although it is moderated. When it comes to Saudi, I think you are totally off base. Saudi is hardline Sunni, Wahabiism and orthodox Sharia rules the realm.
"Bashar al - Assad are Alawites, which is a secretive sect that dates back to the 9th century, they are very occultic, they are not really Muslims but yet hold power, The Alawies does allow women to participate in religious services and see them, mostly only for breeding."
I don't know anything about Alawites, but if they are occult and have a powerful history going back very far in time, I suspect that this might be the root for Western interference. It appears that the powers of the west also have occult tendencies and very old bloodlines. That they see women mostly for breeding is not any different in the other countries you mention - even the moderate ones, although this is slowly changing. Do you seriously believe that all other muslim women are not allowed to participate in religious services? Some muslim men regard women's worship as something that should be confined to the home, but Sunni women do worship in Mosques, although it may be done in a separate section.
"Should Assad feel he is about to fall from power, he will strike Israel, possibly with chemical weapons in a final attempt to unify the Muslim world against and greater ‘Zionist’ enemy of Israel."
But you just said that the cornerstone of this conflict was the generations long battle between Shia and Sunni, so Assad would have nothing of that nature to gain from such a desperate attack.
"Israel will deal Damascus a crushing and devastating response."
You make it sound almost romanticized, when you put it like that. Possibly, but I hope that cooler heads will prevail.
