More From Thunder Road

Some weekend reading but also we have the winners of the latest Hat Contest.

Let's get to the Hat Contest first. Remember, for this contest, we used the closing Globex prices, as shown on the kitco chars on the main page. As everyone can see, gold closed at $1582.40 (yuck) and silver finished at $27.10 (ick). The entries were graciously compiled by Turdite "rl999" and the winners are:

  • In gold, with a guess of $1582.16 - "interwebzmonies"
  • In silver, with a spot-on guess of $27.10 - "himalaya2"

As per usual, I need the winners to email me at tfmetalsreport at gmail dot com. I need your shipping info.

OK, back to business. There wasn't a CoT yesterday. Because last Wednesday was a federal holiday and because the CoT is cranked out by federal employees (CFTC), the CoT won't be released until Monday. What a joke this is! Try getting away with that in the private sector. Do you think your private sector boss would allow this? If a report is due on Friday, then it's due on Friday. Additionally, it just goes to show how purposefully opaque the CoT is. As Uncle Ted has repeatedly pointed out, there is NO REASON that the CoT can't be released the day after the survey. The delay in releasing the information makes it less valuable and, therefore, the markets easier to manipulate. Releasing the CoT yesterday would have been after just TWO business days and, clearly, we can't have that now can we? Again, what a joke.

Finally, here's your reading assignment for the weekend. You may recall the emphasis I placed on the last issue of The Thunder Road Report by Paul Mylchreest. It was a comprehensive summary of the techniques and methods used by The Cartels to manipulate and suppress the prices of gold and silver. If you missed it or would like a refresher, the report can be found here:

http://www.tfmetalsreport.com/blog/3590/traveling-thunder-road

In his latest report, Paul discusses an issue that is obviously near-and-dear to my heart: The Coming Change In The International Trade Settlement System (TCCITITSS). As regular readers know, I've been writing about this every chance I get. To read that Paul has come to many of the same conclusions is gratifying.

Please take the time to digest the report and discuss it in the comments section. I firmly believe that this Change is coming. The effects and implications of this Change will not be felt exclusively in the U.S., of that you can be certain. Therefore, we must all prepare.

@ daveyboy, Are you being intentionally obtuse or something?

Here in the U.S., the mainstream media is a parade of Baghdad Bobs.  There are no tanks here in Baghdad!  There's no recession in the U.S.!  There's no reason to doubt our currency!  You should put all your money into the booming stock market!

I can't see how, if you're american, you can honestly make the argument you're making.

Why are they militarizing the police?? why did they pass the national defense authorization act? They know whats coming.

You are correct. They know exactly what is coming. In fact they are bring it to pass, martial law and the NDNA is the end game our Republic. I feel your pain. There are a lot of people in your predicament.... doing what they can against this insanity. I employ 25 people that have little or no clue what is about to befall them. Our world as we know it will change in a day. All we await now is the trigger event, whatever that will be.

What you are remarking on and

What you are remarking on and what I am remarking on illustrate the contrast.

On the one hand they deliver the mantra of everything is fine and dandy but for the more "intellectual" choosing they go with the alarmist the world is about to absolutely collapse headlines.

The alternative media continue the latter delivery and amp it up several notches. There is no point in paying attention to any of that garbage and yes there is a lot of fear mongering that goes on. You and I we are getting poorer, but there is no sudden collapse, it's incrementally collapsing, but to put this into context, the Euro would have to electronically print 5 times as much money into circulation than it's current level in order to usurp the dollar. That is not going to happen and therefore despite all of the bashing of the dollar, it remains the most integral of the currency's and it would be a brave person that predicted that this will not continue for at least another 10 years.

Water wheel

Hey all, I'm back from vacation. I wanted to share some pictures of a water wheel that our family has been building for the past 4 years!

The plans for this design (which was 40% more efficient than the wheels common prior to it) were obtained from a French library. The design was created by a French mathematician. Common water wheels in the day were 30% efficient (70% of the energy was not being captured). This design is 70% efficient.

It was just completed last week. We set it in place and got it running. We still don't have it hooked up to power anything, but that will happen before fall.

It stands about 16 feet tall in total, and the radius of the wheel is about 6 feet. It is currently only turning at 14 rpm with the gear we have there, but we will have it step down multiple more times for a total end outcome of over 1,000 rpm. There is only about 30 inches of step-down from the upper pond (the mill stock) to the lower one.

The majority of it was fabricated from old steel and then welded together. We did all the work ourselves. None of it was outsourced. My final vacation project was to create the fence so the little kiddies don't fall into the mill race. The wheel would crush them completely. The wheel itself weighs over 3,000 lb.

I have some amazing videos of it working but am not sure how to post them.

Hope these photos/links work:

EDIT: I updated this post in an attempt to make the images smaller. Sorry.

Great quote from a great man

In Proverbs, we read, “For the commandment is a lamp” (Prov. 6:23). Once darkened, a society loses its capacity to distinguish between right and wrong and the will to declare that some things are wrong per se. Without the lamp, our world finds itself desperately building temporary defenses, drawing new lines, forever falling back, unwilling to confront. A society which permits anything will eventually lose everything!

Dr. G, that is AMAZING.

Not sure about your material choice though, it looks like it will rust out in a few years, as it is already corroded pretty severely.  Hopefully not.

Gramp's picture

Wow Dr.G!

That is a cool project!!

did you guys place the "footing" stones under the wheel base? Or where they in place already?

what is the flood/ drought extremes the watershed cycles through? I think the old mills here used a wooden water trough to bring the water (at a desired flow rate) to the wheel from the elevated pond.

I live on an old mill Brook here, and there once was 6 mills running within 200 yards of my place! The old style Mills , you know, for Carding Wool, Making shingles, Sawing Lumber, Grinding  grains... ect!

Congrats Dr. G! what do you think you might try for the first run of your wheel?

Answers:The material will be

Answers:

The material will be fine (we hope!). Some of that material is already 30 years old.

We placed the footings by tractor and then drilled into them to bolt the supports. We also had to shave them a bit (with MULTIPLE diamond bits) to get the millrace to fit snugly between them. We used one of our tractors, our Case 590 Super M (seen below) to move everything around.

There is always water to be had where this is located. We manually open and close the millstock. Even on a bad year (we are in a drought this year) there is plenty of water to power it.

I just did the math, it will be at 1,204 RPM when we are done with it.

Dr. G, simply amazing!  Let us know how it works post launch, including problems and troubleshooting.

To follow up on the farm as retreat comments, there are a number of examples of the dangers of the isolated farm, in transitional countries in addition to the post by bam about Argentina.  Zimbabwe and South Africa for example, where farmers were overrun and run off, or worse.  I tend to go with real life lessons.

I didn't intend to be dramatic and endorse that the U.S. will look like the former Yugoslavia, I frankly don't know.  I know there will be a collapse.  I know it will 'hard' and the meaning of hard we will find out in good time.  I know hard will end and economies and trading communities will be rebuilt, as they always are.  It will be a shift to something I believe will be better and more hopeful than what we have now.  Remember we can't 'unlearn' what we know technologically, material sciences, medicine, nuclear energy etc.  The key is to prepare my family and my community to make the transition.  Sadly also, there will always be those who choose not to, by ignorance or intention.

Odd

So I was running on the treadmill around 1PM when my Belkin router shut off (as it is wont to do.)  When I reset it and went to sign on, one of the available networks was named "FBI Field Van."  Hmmmmm.  I'm in a quiet residential area and sure didn't see any vans.

Dr G's picture

@TexasStacker, it's not

@TexasStacker, it's not uncommon for people to name their home networks with terms FBI and CIA etc in the names in order to discourage others from siphering their Wi-Fi. My home network is named something similar to what you mentioned.

Yes, my post is (hopefully) tongue in cheek.  It is odd that it was only visable on my available networks for about 20 minutes and I know all my neighbors and their networks well .  So probably nothing....?

Another stupid question

If I decide to make a run for it before they pick me up and send me to reeducation camp, can I legally take 10,000 unreported ASEs with me across the border since they have a stated value of $1 each?

Why do some coins have reeded, or grooved edges?

The half-dollar, quarter-dollar, and 10-cent (dime) denominations were originally produced from precious metals, mostly silver and gold. The reeded edges were created to make sure no one would alter the coins by attempting to file off the edges to retrieve some of the precious metals.
