Past is Present ... & just as Tense

As an aside I was watching a tv programme two nights ago about the 1970's in the UK, particularly 1973-4,(http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01gvr25) which were the years of the oil shock, coalition govt, coal miners strikes, 3 day week, devaluation of the pound and double digit inflation.  What struck me is how similar it all seems to where we are heading now and I feel that it will be a 40 year cycle where we get to see all the same things again in 2013-4.  The footage of interviews with housewives complaining about not being able to budget for their weekly shop due to the ever increasing food prices seemed particularly prescient, plus the most popular tv programme was called 'Doomwatch'! and self-sufficiency took hold.  Sound familiar?!

Just my sov's worth

And to add my Groat's worth, it WAS INDEED depressing & it was that period during the 70's that led to me going overseas to Africa for many years .... and I agree that NOW is indeed getting very much like THEN.

You mentioned "Doomwatch", but don't forget the original UK "Survivors" 1970's series (which was quite good/realistic at showing how society/survivors might end up eking out a living in the event of societal collapse from ANY cause).

Just catching up...

Good morning folks...Lots of diverse and critical (and fun) thoughts/comments last night.

EO's dog has the right idea...just ignore it all and sleep near the warm spot.

In honor of Brucker today...

@Atarangi

You would think in 2012 they could get some Oysters across the world in fine shape.  They can fish Tuna in Japan today and it can be in a NY restaurant by dinner tomorrow.

It's not like we don't have access to Oysters but those NZ Oysters do look inviting.   Maybe I'll have to settle for some smoked NZ Oysters.

I know what you need.   A taste of NY bagels and Pizza.  Don't think you are going to find these delightful delicacies everywhere in the world.   You need to be at the right elevation and the PH of the water has to be just right.  Bus fumes and cholorine in the water adds a nice after taste.  Add a nice shmear of creme cheese and some tasty gravalax and pretty much in heaven.  Oh yeah, a nice cup of java.

Ya can't get pizza like this in Italy.  Joint #3 is where I get my regular fix.  Mama Mia

That's interesting because I couldn't find anything on the  Moscow stock exchange either and I wondered if it opened back up or what the story was. Nada!

I agree, the SOMC has to be straining under all the pressure points that are inflamed.

Asking 'why?'  is what I do about many things and it's in my inquisitive nature to try and understand things to get to the 'root', or as close to it as possible.

"Why" is the shovel that keeps me digging.  You never want to hit a rock and get to the "Now what?" point. Most of us here are preparing for 'that rock' in the future.

Gotta love NYC for a piece of the finest pizza pie - ever, but a lox bagel there is also hard to beat ... Oh how I miss my best friend living in NYC so I could get to visit on a regular basis and taste such things .....

Don't get me wrong Brick Lane (now known as Samantha Brick Lane if you have missed the latest media furor) in the East End of London has one of the finest bagel houses for perusing after a hard nights clubbing, but nothing beats NYC *sigh*

I'm Learning History

John Michael Greer, http://thearchdruidreport.blogspot.com/, has  started a multi-part history of the US Empire, it's rise from the beginning-colonization-to the demise that we're witnessing the beginnings of today. Ties in the industrial revolution, economics, politics, military power and personalities.

I highly recommend this series for anyone who wants an in depth overview of what the hell is going on today; not that there's any investment advice or ideas about which miners (more's the pity) are going to take off, but just a kind of peace of mind factor about the inevitability of what's coming down and the mind set that might make the future more bearable; tomorrow won't be the same as yesterday.

This is just a bit from last weeks installment: edit; this is from part 10

"Like every imperial system, this one has had its ups and downs. It avoided Britain’s successful but costly policy of bringing large regions under direct political control, preferring instead to install compliant local rulers who would keep the wealth pump running in exchange for a small share of the take. It faltered in the 1970s as America’s other empire, the empire of time that paid tribute by way of oil wells, reached its peak production and tipped into permanent decline, and then gambled everything in the next decade on a daring strategy of economic warfare. That gamble paid off spectacularly, wrecking the Soviet Union and fueling the 1990s boom by feeding the nations of eastern Europe into the business end of America’s wealth pump, stripping half a dozen nations to the bare walls under the euphemisms of economic reform and a market economy."

If anyone cares to read and comment on what he has to say I'd appreciate it; I find him able to say a lot with few words and have become very impressed with his style of writing from a literary perspective. He seems to be able to call a spade a spade without it being name calling if that makes sense.

@Eric O, good luck to Bucker today! our neighbors' dog went for that kind of treatment a while back and came through fine; the dog really seemed to enjoy the pain meds afterward toowink

Ra Ra, What sticks out in my

Ra Ra,

What sticks out in my culinary memory of London is the quality of Indian Food.  The places I've eaten had extremely fresh curries.

I'm a pretty good cook but Indian food is something that i have never seemed to be very succesful with trying at home.

For the first time in a long time...

...I managed to find something to show to my wife on YouTube that made her laugh out loud. This is an oldie but a goodie, teaching us the relativity of unstoppable forces and immovable objects:

Here's what I'm doing while I look at my miners in the green for a change, wait on a call from the vet, and wait on the Bernank:

You have mentioned the very thing that Brick Lane in the East End (http://visiteastlondon.com/index.php/spitalfields-bricklane) is most famous for - curry houses back to back!  We used to live in Stratford (home of the Olympics this year) which is only a couple of miles from Brick Lane and it was a regular haunt - as were the 24 hr pubs, prior to the change of the licensing laws, who were granted such open hours to service the markets in the East End, such as Spitalfields.  Trendy Hoxton is now more famous for it's art, such as Banksy, Gilbert & George & Tracey Emin.

Oh & it would be rude not to mention the Blind Beggar (http://theblindbeggar.com/index.php/home) on Whitechapel Road, a mile or so away, which was famous as one of the Krays drinking establishments and even when we lived there you could be sure to meet an old Kray acquaintance if you stopped for a libation!

I loved living in the East End and miss it :)

you sir are a shining silver coin among a pile of cupronickel.

what comes to mind is the commentary of a norwegian chap when beating england at football:

your 'modern art' skills are so good that -  michelangelo, can you hear me?

raphael, piero, rembrandt, durer, cezanne, turner, constable...your boys took a hell of a beating!!

A 1970's "Blast from the Past"

Thought you might like these "Blasts from the Past" that are still relevant today

Talking of art & artists

Talking of art I missed the discussion a while back so here's a couple of my favourites - Beryl Cook (who died a few years ago) & Sara-Jane Szikora.  We have copies of both hanging on our walls.   I am also a fan of Klee & Kandinsky.

The second one may not mean much to folks outside of the UK as these are all British penny sweets, but who knows!

Golden dreams and global nightmares - - -

The most important thing a person must grab if they wish to defend their hard-earned wealth in this day and age is that the value of real goods is not going up; the BUYING POWER OF THE PAPER MONEY IS GOING DOWN.We have entered a new era of economic warfare. Make no mistake, this is warfare being conducted on a global scale, and it is no less deadly than a kinetic war. After using the tool of being severed from the international payments system as leverage, the US and European nations are all but guaranteeing that the current system will be called into question. By removing a country’s ability to conduct international bank transfers over the SWIFT system, the USA is essentially forcing nations to take a good hard look at if they want to be next. This is not an idle concern, as the US has already made threats intimating this to several other countries.2

This policy is nothing more than the equivalent of the USA shooting itself in its own foot. Instead of compliance, the USA is incurring a massive move away from the USD. What happens when countries all unofficially start settling oil purchases with gold? By using these new weapons of Economic Warfare, Western Central banks run the risk of encouraging other nations to resort to alternate payment methods and systems. The move towards alternative methods is already underway.

There has been a tremendous amount of “scurrying activity” lately as countries position themselves to completely avoid SWIFT if necessary. This entire episode is like a bully (the USA) who has long dominated a playground by ordering around all the others on the playground and using various threats of military and financial use of force as the stick. Unfortunately for the bully, the others have decided to build their own playground and simply leaving the bully behind, not inviting him to play.http://www.silverbearcafe.com/private/04.12/dreams.html

GL curry help

If you want a proper tasting home cooked curry then this ladies kits are fantastic and she ships to the US!  She is a well known Indian chef here in the UK and I can vouch for her spice kits as we buy them a lot as it is not far from where we live now (and close to the house of Bacon). The metal container that you buy contains all the spices needed for the perfect curry flavour of your choice and all you have to add is coconut milk and meat/fish/vegetables of your choice.

http://www.spicebox.co.uk/about/

If you have a bit of fiat to spare might be worth a try?
